Furry Friend Friday: Logan’s Wild Adventures and the Perplexing Poop Problem

Welcome back to another delightful edition of Furry Friend Friday, where we bring you the latest escapades and heartwarming (and sometimes head-scratching) moments with Logan, our beloved Golden Retriever puppy. If you’re a fan of Golden Retrievers, the endless energy of puppies, or simply adore dogs in general, then you’re in for a treat as we share his weekly antics. Logan keeps life interesting, to say the least, and his journey from a tiny pup to a magnificent companion is truly a joy to behold. This week, we delve into a topic that every dog owner eventually confronts, often with a mix of disgust and bewilderment: the fascinating, albeit repulsive, world of canine coprophagia, or as we like to call it, the “poop problem.”

The Unspoken Word of the Week: Poop

Yes, I really did just say the word “poop.” And yes, it is the designated “Word of the Week” for this Furry Friend Friday post. Each week, I’ve decided to choose a word that encapsulates Logan’s most significant adventures or challenges from the past seven days. While there are countless charming moments with our Golden Retriever puppy – his playful leaps, his affectionate snuggles, his undeniable puppy dog eyes – this particular week, one topic dominated our conversations and interactions: poop. This wasn’t just a fleeting observation; it became a central theme of our recent outdoor excursions and a source of considerable frustration. But before we dive deeper into this rather delicate subject and explore potential solutions, let’s set the scene with some recent travels and our ill-fated hiking attempt.

Last Saturday, my husband Kurt and I decided to venture out for a new hiking experience, driving a little over an hour west to the quaint and picturesque Wickenburg area. This charming town is a favorite occasional getaway for us, known for its rustic beauty, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere. We often enjoy exploring its unique shops, admiring the Western architecture, and sampling local eateries. The idea was to discover a new, dog-friendly trail where Logan could burn off some energy and enjoy the great outdoors.

If you ever find yourself passing through Wickenburg, I highly recommend a stop at The Local Press. It’s a small, unassuming spot, but they craft some of the most incredibly delicious sandwiches you’ll ever taste! Their fresh ingredients, creative combinations, and friendly service make it a perfect refuel point before or after an adventure. With Logan eagerly in tow, his tail wagging with anticipation, we were excited for a day of scenic exploration and outdoor fun, envisioning a perfect day spent reconnecting with nature.

The Wickenburg Hike: A Trail Less Traveled (and More Poop-Filled)

Our initial vision for the hike was idyllic: a beautiful, serene trail with sparkling water for Logan to splash and romp in. We imagined him happily wading, chasing sticks, and cooling off on what promised to be a warm desert day. We carefully researched what seemed to be a perfect spot, brimming with anticipation for a memorable family outing with our energetic Golden Retriever puppy. We packed water, snacks, and plenty of enthusiasm.

WRONG! The reality of the trail was a stark contrast to our hopeful expectations, quickly turning our idyllic vision into a sandy, malodorous misadventure.

What we found was miles upon miles of a sandy creek bed, completely dry and devoid of the refreshing water we had envisioned. The landscape, while open and vast, largely lacked the breathtaking, Instagram-worthy views we’d hoped for. Walking through the deep, loose sand proved to be an unexpected and exhausting challenge, making every step an effort for both us and Logan. Our muscles ached, and Logan’s paws sank with each stride, slowing our pace considerably. But even more challenging, and far more unpleasant, was the sheer abundance of… well, you guessed it: POOP! And not just a little, but lots and lots of it.

Oh, the poop! There was so much of it, practically everywhere we looked, creating a minefield of unsanitary surprises. This particular trail, we quickly discovered, runs alongside a road dotted with numerous homes, many of which boasted expansive horse barns. It became abundantly clear that this wasn’t just a general hiking trail; it was, in fact, a popular and well-used route for horseback riders. While wonderful for equestrian enthusiasts and a scenic path for horses, it presented an unforeseen and highly unsanitary problem for dog walkers, especially those with a curious Golden Retriever puppy.

Not for Walking Dogs Who Suddenly Discover Horse Poop is a Gourmet Treat! HELLO!

Our curious Golden Retriever puppy, Logan, with his adventurous spirit and penchant for exploring everything with his mouth, quickly zeroed in on the plentiful horse manure. To our utter dismay, he seemed to find it an incredibly appealing snack, a delectable discovery in an otherwise uninspiring landscape! The little stinker (and honestly, no pun intended when I first wrote that, but it perfectly fits the situation!) would gleefully pick up mouthfuls of it, treating it like the most exciting treat he’d ever encountered. It was truly a scene out of a puppy owner’s worst nightmare.

It was utterly disgusting. Each time, we’d have to physically intervene, gently but firmly prying open his mouth and carefully extracting the offensive morsel. ICK! The thought of it still makes my stomach churn, and the smell lingered long after the fact. The joy of the hike rapidly diminished, replaced by a constant vigilance against Logan’s newfound culinary preference for horse manure. We were essentially on a continuous “poop patrol” rather than enjoying a peaceful walk. Needless to say, what was planned as an eight-mile trek quickly turned into a much shorter, albeit eventful and memorable, excursion. We simply couldn’t continue in such conditions, constantly battling a puppy who saw the trail as an all-you-can-eat buffet of horse droppings, risking his health and our sanity.

Despite the poop-related drama, Logan did attempt a bit of rock climbing. With his characteristic puppy enthusiasm, he tried to scale a few small boulders, though he didn’t have much luck finding his footing on the smooth surfaces. His little paws slipped, and his attempts were adorable, even if unsuccessful, providing a brief moment of levity amidst the less pleasant discoveries. It was a reminder that even when things aren’t going as planned, a Golden Retriever puppy’s inherent joy can still shine through.

Logan’s Home Life: Sofa Surfing and Cat Chasing Antics

Back at home, Logan continues to master new skills and find new ways to keep us entertained, or sometimes, on our toes. His latest achievement? Easily jumping onto the couch! While this might seem like a small feat for many dogs, it represents a significant developmental milestone for Logan, and unfortunately, a major change for our resident feline, Mittens. Our poor cat, who once considered the couch her ultimate “safe place” from the boisterous puppy’s relentless energy, has now had her sanctuary thoroughly invaded. The peace she once enjoyed perched atop the cushions is a distant memory. It turns out that the unused ping-pong table is practically the last bastion of peace she has left in the house, a solitary island in a sea of puppy chaos. We often find her perched atop it, casting weary, exasperated glances at Logan, who, oblivious to her distress, is usually found sprawled contentedly across the cushions, looking utterly pleased with himself.

His playful pursuit of the cat is a daily spectacle, a comical chase scene that unfolds throughout our home. While we always ensure their interactions are safe and gentle, and never truly allow him to “catch” her, Logan’s sheer size and boundless energy can be quite overwhelming for our smaller, more reserved cat. We’re constantly working on teaching him appropriate boundaries and “leave it” commands, but his enthusiasm and curiosity often get the better of him. It’s a classic puppy-cat dynamic unfolding in our living room, a test of patience and training for us, and an exercise in agility for Mittens.

Park Walks and the Persistent Poop Problem: Seeking Solutions for Coprophagia

To help manage Logan’s boundless energy and ensure he gets adequate mental and physical stimulation, I often take him for invigorating walks in our local park after I’ve finished my work for the day. It’s a wonderful, serene place with a charming pond, home to ducks and fish, and a picturesque waterfall. These walks are essential for both of us – a chance to stretch our legs, breathe in some fresh air, and for Logan, an opportunity to burn off some of that characteristic Golden Retriever zest for life. These outings are not just about physical exercise; they’re vital for his mental stimulation, allowing him to explore new scents, encounter new sights, and interact with the world around him in a safe and controlled environment.

Kurt and I were just discussing this yesterday, reflecting on the sheer amount of energy Logan possesses. We shudder to think what our house would look like if we didn’t walk him two to three times a day, consistently providing him with outlets for his exuberance. He’s such an energetic breed, and without sufficient, consistent exercise, he’d undoubtedly be tearing the place apart, channeling his energy into destructive behaviors! YIKES! It’s a testament to the critical importance of consistent physical activity and mental engagement for puppies, especially for active, intelligent breeds like Golden Retrievers, to ensure they grow into well-adjusted, happy companions.

However, the “poop problem” hasn’t been confined to just our Wickenburg hike. This week, Kurt has had to reprimand Logan several times during their morning trail walks near our house. Why? Because, you guessed it, Logan has started picking up and eating… poop! And it’s not even his own waste in our backyard, which he thankfully leaves untouched. Instead, he seems to have an insatiable curiosity and appetite for other animals’ droppings encountered on the trails. UGH! It’s utterly baffling and incredibly frustrating, especially after all our efforts in training and supervision.

So, I’m genuinely asking the collective wisdom of fellow dog owners: WHY???? Why do dogs like to eat poop? This phenomenon, known scientifically as coprophagia, is surprisingly common among dogs, but it’s something I’ve never personally experienced with my previous dogs. Our beloved Brady and Keiser NEVER did anything of the sort. I’ve heard countless stories from other dog owners, and I even know a friend’s dog who enjoys his own, but for our Logan, it’s always been about the “found” treasures on walks, particularly the tantalizing allure of other animals’ leavings. Is it a sign of a nutritional deficiency that he’s trying to correct? Is it simply boredom, or an instinctual curiosity that leads him to explore the world through his mouth? Or is it merely a gross, hard-to-break puppy habit?

If any of you seasoned dog owners have ANY helpful hints, proven strategies, or personal anecdotes about how you successfully deterred this behavior with your pooches, please, PLEASE let me know. I’m truly at my wit’s end, trying everything from strict “leave it” commands to trying to manage the environment. I’m almost ready to consider getting him a muzzle specifically for our walks, just to prevent him from indulging in these unsanitary habits and protect his health. Your advice and shared experiences would be incredibly invaluable as we navigate this challenging aspect of Golden Retriever puppy ownership!

Balancing the Mischief with Melt-Your-Heart Moments: The Joys of a Golden Retriever Puppy

Despite his occasional gross habits and boundless energy, Logan is still the sweetest, most loving companion. He’s incredibly cuddly, especially in the mornings when he’ll snuggle close, his soft, golden fur a warm comfort against me. Those quiet moments, filled with his gentle presence and a happy sigh, truly melt my heart and remind me why we adore this furry friend so much. It’s in these moments that all the training challenges, the endless cleanup duties, and the frustrating instances of coprophagia fade into the background, replaced by pure, unconditional affection. His ability to switch from mischievous puppy to loving companion is truly remarkable.

Life with Logan is certainly never dull; it’s a constant adventure! On Monday night, we took him for a walk in the open fields near our home and decided to let him off-leash so he could really stretch his legs and run freely, enjoying the expanse of the open space. I got a good head start, running ahead, and then Kurt released him. The son of a gun came flying towards me with incredible speed, a blur of golden fur! Instead of artfully maneuvering around me as I expected, he seemed to misjudge his trajectory and took out both my legs, sending me sprawling onto my derriere in a rather undignified heap! It HURT! I’ve been nursing one rather impressive, eggplant-colored bruise on my keister ever since. It was a hilarious, if painful, reminder of his powerful puppy energy and enthusiasm, proving that even playtime can have its unexpected hazards.

That same night, during our walk, we had another exciting encounter with a group of javelinas (peccaries). These wild, pig-like animals are common in our desert region, and while fascinating to observe from a distance, it’s always best to keep a respectful space, especially with a curious and excitable puppy in tow. Thankfully, they were far enough away that it wasn’t a concern, and Logan, preoccupied with his running and sniffing, barely noticed them. We were able to safely observe them before continuing our walk.

His curious and sometimes destructive nature isn’t limited to the outdoors or his furry feline companion. Just yesterday, while I was engrossed in work at my home office, I looked over to see Logan calmly gnawing on the leg of my study table, a look of focused determination on his face. WHAT?! It’s a constant battle with puppy teething and discovering what is and isn’t an appropriate chew toy. We provide him with plenty of appropriate chew toys, bones, and enrichment puzzles, but sometimes, the allure of forbidden household items, like a sturdy wooden table leg, is just too strong for a teething Golden Retriever puppy with an insatiable need to chew.

On a brighter note, amidst all the challenges, I think we’ve finally got him pretty much house-trained. He did have a small accident last night – and yes, it was POOP! – but overall, he’s doing a really great job with his potty training, showing remarkable progress. Now that we’re mostly past the constant clean-up phase, I’m super excited to finally get our carpets professionally cleaned, knowing that our little Golden Retriever puppy is making excellent progress towards becoming a perfectly house-mannered companion!
