December 17 Briefing

Welcome back, dear readers! While this update might be a day later than planned, the spirit of good news and festive cheer is certainly still with us. Reflecting on the past week, it was truly a delightful one, filled with cherished family traditions, inspiring artistic performances, and, of course, plenty of delicious food. Sometimes, a little delay simply means more time to gather our thoughts and share even more enriching content with you.

Last Sunday, our home away from home was my brother-in-law’s residence, where we gathered for our eagerly anticipated annual gingerbread house making party. This cherished tradition brings Kurt’s side of the family together each holiday season, fostering laughter, creativity, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. Although not every family member could join us this year, those who attended experienced a truly wonderful time. The air was filled with joyous chatter, the sweet aroma of gingerbread and icing, and an abundance of sugary decorations. It’s these simple, heartwarming moments that truly define the holiday season, creating memories that last long after the last gingerbread shingle has been placed.

Adding another layer of wonder to the week, I had the incredible opportunity last night to witness Rebecca Lindamood, the talent behind Foodie with Family, beam with pride as her son, Rowan, graced the stage in a stunning performance of The Nutcracker right here in Rhode Island. Though their family resides near Buffalo, Rowan was invited as a distinguished guest artist at the Ocean State Ballet, a testament to his exceptional skill and dedication. At just 17 years old, his performance was nothing short of remarkable, showcasing a level of artistry and technical prowess that is truly rare for his age.

Rowan’s talent is, in fact, so extraordinary that he has been selected as one of only seven boys nationwide to represent the United States next month at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland. This esteemed competition is renowned globally as a pivotal stepping stone for aspiring ballet dancers, offering unparalleled opportunities for career advancement and exposure to leading ballet academies and companies worldwide. Simply participating in the Prix de Lausanne can open countless doors, propelling a young artist’s career to new heights. For Rowan, this is not just a competition; it’s a life-changing opportunity to showcase years of relentless dedication, discipline, and passion on an international stage.

As you can imagine, an international trip of this magnitude, including travel, accommodation, and competition fees, involves considerable expenses. If you are a supporter of the arts, particularly passionate about nurturing young talent, and would like to contribute to making Rowan’s dream a reality, we warmly invite you to visit Rowan’s GoFundMe page. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference and will be profoundly appreciated in helping this incredibly gifted young man seize such a monumental opportunity. Your generosity can help launch a brilliant career and inspire countless others. Thank you for considering supporting the arts and Rowan’s incredible journey.

Our Favorite Products of the Week: Comfort and Coziness

I must confess, I used to be one of those staunch individuals who vehemently declared I would NEVER wear Crocs. I honestly thought they looked quite peculiar. However, life has a funny way of changing our minds! For years, I adored the cozy slippers I received from L.L. Bean, but without adequate arch support and after extensive wear, I found myself walking on the sides, leaving them misshapen and increasingly uncomfortable. My quest for a new, lined slipper that offered both warmth and essential support led me down an unexpected path.

During my search, I stumbled upon these Crocs on Amazon. Believe me, my skepticism was high, but driven by the need for comfort, I decided to take the plunge and ordered them. And wow, what a revelation! They arrived yesterday, and I am absolutely smitten. They are incredibly lightweight, provide exceptional comfort, and offer surprisingly good support, making them the perfect house shoe. While I still maintain I won’t be wearing these out in public, as the saying goes, “never say never,” right? They have truly transformed my at-home comfort experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone seeking a supportive and cozy indoor slipper.

I’ve got another delightful discovery for you this week! If you appreciate the comforting warmth of tea and the rich, fruity notes of apple cider, then you are highly likely to fall in love with this Hot Apple Cider Tea as much as I have. From the moment you steep it, the aroma alone is incredibly inviting and smells absolutely divine, filling your kitchen with a cozy, autumnal fragrance. The taste is equally impressive, delivering all the delicious, wholesome flavor of a warm cup of apple cider, but without the excessive sweetness often found in traditional cider. It’s a truly comforting beverage, perfect for chilly evenings or a soothing break during the day, offering a pure and natural taste that will quickly become a favorite.

Kitchen Wisdom: Our Tip of the Week for Less Mess and More Joy

During our recent gingerbread house making party, one common challenge quickly became apparent: filling and using piping bags, especially for children. When people, particularly little ones, struggle to hold piping bags correctly, the process can quickly devolve into a messy, frustrating, and even tear-inducing experience. Preventing these moments of distress is key to a fun and creative environment. To avoid the mess and the tears, consider a simple yet highly effective alternative for applying frosting: Ziploc bags. After filling a Ziploc bag with frosting, securely seal the top, and then snip off a small piece from one corner. This method provides a much easier grip and allows for more controlled piping, making the activity enjoyable for all ages.

For those who prefer traditional piping bags, or for more intricate decorating tasks, I have a fantastic tip that significantly simplifies the filling process and minimizes mess. When I need to fill a piping bag with a tip already attached, I employ a simple technique using a tall glass. Here’s how it works: first, fold the tip of the piping bag upwards to prevent any filling from escaping prematurely. Then, place the bag into a tall glass, gently folding the top edges of the bag over the rim of the glass. This creates a much wider, stable opening, making it incredibly easy to spoon or pour your frosting into the bag without any spills. Once the bag is filled to your desired level, carefully remove it from the glass. Hold the top securely and give the bag a gentle shake; this helps the filling settle down towards the tip. Finally, use your fingers to smooth the bag, pushing the contents firmly towards the tip before twisting the top of the bag. This ensures that when you squeeze, the filling comes out only through the nozzle, preventing any accidental escapes from the top and allowing for precise, frustration-free decorating.

I am always eager to learn new ways to make kitchen tasks more efficient, organized, and enjoyable! If you have any invaluable tips or tricks that have helped you streamline your cooking or baking routines, I would absolutely love to hear them. Please share your insights with our community! If I choose to feature your tip in an upcoming newsletter, I will be delighted to give you a first name shoutout, celebrating your contribution to our collective kitchen wisdom. Your practical advice can genuinely help others find more joy and less stress in their culinary endeavors. ❤️
