Baked Chinese Chicken Wings: Sweet, Sticky, and Unforgettably Flavorful Oven-Baked Wings with a Whiskey Kick

There’s nothing quite like the allure of outdoor grilling. The sizzle, the smoky aroma, the sheer joy of cooking under an open sky. However, for those of us residing in regions where winter seems to linger well into spring – or even early summer – the dream of firing up the barbecue can often clash with the stark reality of the weather. Living in upstate New Hampshire, quite close to the Canadian border, I’m all too familiar with unexpected chilly days that make outdoor cooking less of a pleasure and more of a brave, shivering endeavor.

While some might suggest “sucking it up” and embracing the cold, my heart yearns for warmer days when we can grill steaks, pizzas, sticky ribs, and, of course, delicious chicken. When the elements simply refuse to cooperate, the oven becomes our trusted ally. It’s a fantastic alternative for achieving that perfectly cooked, incredibly flavorful chicken, without having to brave the biting wind. This recipe for Baked Chinese Chicken Wings is a prime example of how you can bring those outdoor-inspired flavors right into your kitchen, delivering a dish that’s both comforting and exciting.
These aren’t just any ordinary chicken wings. We’re talking about a sweet and savory masterpiece, infused with the aromatic depth of Chinese 5-spice, the richness of honey and dark brown sugar, and a surprising, yet delightful, hint of whiskey. This combination creates a glaze that’s deeply complex, incredibly sticky, and utterly irresistible. Whether you’re planning a cozy family dinner, hosting a game day party, or simply craving an explosion of flavor, these oven-baked wings are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser. They transform a simple ingredient into an extraordinary culinary experience, proving that you don’t need a grill to create memorable meals.

Ingredients
- 12 Chicken Wings (about 3 lbs.)
- ½ cup honey
- ½ cup dark brown sugar
- ⅓ cup balsamic vinegar
- ⅓ cup soy sauce
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice
- ¼ cup Jack Daniel’s Whiskey
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon water
- Flat leaf parsley for garnish (if desired)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190°C).
- In a small cup, mix together cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together the honey, dark brown sugar, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, ground ginger, Chinese 5-Spice, and Jack Daniel’s Whiskey.
- Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Stir in the cornstarch mixture (slurry) and allow the sauce to simmer for about 5 minutes, or until it slightly thickens and the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool for 5 minutes. This allows it to thicken further and settle.
- Place the chicken wings into a large bowl.
- Gently pour the cooled sauce over the wings. Using tongs, turn the wings to ensure they are thoroughly coated in the delicious glaze.
- Arrange the coated wings in a single layer in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Ladle any remaining sauce evenly over the wings.
- Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
- Remove the baking dish from the oven. Using clean tongs, carefully turn each chicken wing over to ensure even cooking and glazing. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the wings are cooked through and beautifully caramelized.
- Garnish with fresh flat-leaf parsley, if desired, before serving.

An Honest Review: Culinary Adventures and Family Preferences
In my kitchen, every recipe gets a rating on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the absolute best. These Baked Chinese Chicken Wings, despite their incredible flavor profile and sticky glaze, earned a modest 2 rolling pins. The reason? Well, it turns out my family had a rather specific request: that I not make them again. This might sound surprising for such a seemingly delicious dish, but it highlights a common challenge in cooking – differing preferences and palates.
I suspect a significant part of the issue lies in the fact that, over the years, I’ve somewhat spoiled my family. They’ve grown accustomed to meals made exclusively with boneless chicken breasts, avoiding bones and dark meat altogether. They’ve been “sheltered,” you could say, from the joys of bone-in chicken. My attempt to gently coax them out of this culinary comfort zone was met with limited success. It made me realize that we rarely opt for fried chicken or similar bone-in dishes when dining out; KFC is definitely not on our family’s radar.
So, as always, the decision to embark on this culinary adventure is entirely yours. If your family, unlike mine, appreciates bone-in chicken, or if you’re eager to explore unique Asian-inspired flavors, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to try this recipe. The sauce itself is phenomenal – a rich blend of sweet, savory, and a hint of warmth from the whiskey. It’s a testament to bold flavors and a wonderfully sticky texture that many will undoubtedly adore.
Regardless of my family’s particular leanings, one thing stood out as universally excellent: the Wet-Nap Hand Wipes. They truly proved to be the unsung heroes of dinner, effortlessly removing every trace of the sticky chicken glaze from our hands. In a meal that presented some unexpected family feedback, the convenience and effectiveness of Wet-Nap were undeniable. They made the cleanup a breeze, turning what could have been a truly sticky situation into a manageable one. So, while the wings might not have been a hit with everyone at my table, the practical value of those wipes certainly was, and remember, you can grab them with a coupon for an even better deal!
