Why You’ll Love These No-Bake Christmas Wreath Cookies

If you’re anything like me, the holiday season means your oven is constantly running, bustling with roasts, casseroles, and an endless parade of baked goods. That’s precisely why I have such a special place in my heart for no-bake cookie recipes, especially during the hectic lead-up to Christmas! These little cornflake cookies, reminiscent of classic Rice Krispie Treats, provided the initial spark of inspiration for these festive Christmas delights.

The Benefits of No-Bake Holiday Treats

There are several compelling reasons why no-bake recipes are an absolute lifesaver during this time of year:

  1. Oven Space is Precious: As mentioned, your oven is likely working overtime. With no-bake Christmas Wreath Cookies, you can have a magnificent dinner roasting to perfection in the oven while simultaneously whipping up a batch of these cheerful cornflake treats for dessert, without any scheduling conflicts. It’s the ultimate kitchen multitasking hack!
  2. Effortless Preparation: Beyond freeing up your oven, these no-bake cornflake wreaths are incredibly simple to make. They require minimal fuss and are perfect for last-minute holiday dessert emergencies or spontaneous festive cravings. You can experiment with various ingredients to introduce different flavors and textures, and shape them into almost any size you desire. No matter how you customize them, you can rest assured they’ll be deliciously addictive.
  3. Kid-Friendly Fun: Involving children in holiday preparations creates lasting memories. These no-bake cookies are ideal for little helpers as there’s no hot oven involved, making the process safe and enjoyable for everyone. Kids will love stirring the colorful mixture and decorating their own wreaths!
  4. Speed and Efficiency: From start to finish, these Christmas Wreath Cookies come together quickly. There’s no waiting for butter to soften, dough to chill, or cookies to bake. This means you can have a fresh batch of festive treats ready in under an hour, perfect for unexpected guests or a sudden craving for something sweet.
  5. Versatile and Adaptable: The basic marshmallow-cornflake base is incredibly forgiving. It’s a fantastic canvas for various flavors and decorations, allowing you to get creative and tailor the cookies to your taste or theme.

A Festive Twist on a Classic

This year, I decided to elevate my beloved cornflake cookies by transforming them into delightful Christmas Wreath Cookies! Unlike my original recipe, this holiday version is crafted without any peanut butter, offering a sweet, almost toffee-like flavor profile that perfectly complements the festive season. Their charming appearance, complete with vibrant green cornflakes and darling red licorice bows, is bound to elicit a chorus of “oohs” and “ahhs” when you present them at your holiday parties or gift them to loved ones. They truly are as cute as a button and as delicious as they look!

A collection of ingredients laid out, ready for making Cornflake Wreath Cookies: butter, marshmallows, vanilla, green food coloring, cornflakes, cinnamon candies, and licorice.

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Cornflake Wreaths

Creating these charming no-bake Christmas Wreath Cookies requires only a handful of readily available ingredients. Here’s everything you’ll need to make these festive cornflake wreaths:

  • Butter: Half a cup of unsalted butter forms the rich, foundational base for our marshmallow mixture, contributing to the cookies’ chewy texture and subtle richness.
  • Miniature Marshmallows: Five cups of miniature marshmallows are the magic ingredient that binds the cornflakes together, creating that wonderfully sticky and sweet consistency similar to classic cereal treats.
  • Pure Vanilla or Almond Extract: One teaspoon of pure vanilla extract adds a warm, classic sweetness. For a slightly different, more pronounced holiday flavor, you could opt for almond extract.
  • Green Food Coloring: Approximately 1 ¼ teaspoons of green food coloring is essential to achieve that iconic festive wreath shade. I typically use gel food coloring for its vibrant intensity, but liquid food coloring works too; just be prepared to adjust the amount to reach your desired hue.
  • Corn Flakes: Four cups of crisp cornflakes provide the perfect crunchy texture for our wreaths. Their irregular shape mimics the natural texture of a wreath beautifully.
  • Cinnamon Candies for Holly Berries: These little red candies add a touch of traditional holiday color and a delightful hint of spice. Both classic red hot candies and cinnamon imperials work wonderfully. If cinnamon isn’t your preference, feel free to use red candy sprinkles or even small red M&Ms for decoration.
  • Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel Licorice: About 10 single strands of this ‘shoe lace’ style strawberry licorice, cut in half, are used to create the adorable little bows that adorn each wreath. Any similar pliable red licorice will do.

Crafting Your Cornflake Christmas Wreaths: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making these Cornflake Christmas Wreaths is a fun and straightforward process. Follow these detailed steps to ensure your holiday treats are both beautiful and delicious.

Step 1: Prepare Your Licorice Bows (Do This First!)

Before you even think about melting butter, it’s crucial to prepare your licorice bows. This step is important because the cornflake mixture hardens quickly, and you want to ensure your bows are ready to be pressed on immediately after shaping. I used Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel Licorice for their ideal texture and easy manipulation.

  1. Take the Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel licorice and carefully divide it into single strands.
  2. Cut each single strand in half to create shorter pieces, perfect for small bows.
  3. To form a bow: Hold one end of a licorice piece in your left hand, creating a small loop. With your right hand, push the loose end of the licorice piece upwards to form a second loop, mirroring the first.
  4. Carefully bring the two loops together at the center and squeeze the middle firmly. This will help the licorice stick to itself, forming a cute little bow shape.
  5. Repeat this process until you have approximately 20 bows, enough for all your wreaths.
  6. Pro Tip: I recommend making these bows just before you plan to assemble the wreaths. When I made them the day before and stored them in a Ziploc bag, some of the loops regrettably broke by the next morning. Freshly made bows are more pliable and hold their shape better. Place your finished bows on a cookie sheet or a clean work surface for easy access during decoration.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Line a large clean work surface (like a countertop or baking sheet) with parchment paper or wax paper. This will prevent your wreaths from sticking and make cleanup a breeze.

Step 3: Melt the Base

In a large nonstick pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once the butter is fully melted, add the miniature marshmallows. Stir continuously until the marshmallows are completely smooth and melted, creating a gooey, uniform mixture. Be patient and stir constantly to prevent scorching.

Step 4: Add Color and Flavor

Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the green food coloring and vanilla extract (or almond extract) into the melted marshmallow mixture. Mix thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed and the mixture is a vibrant, uniform green. The key to beautiful wreaths is consistent coloring!

Step 5: Incorporate the Cornflakes

Gently fold the cornflakes into the green marshmallow mixture. Stir carefully but quickly until the cornflakes are fully coated. Avoid crushing the cornflakes too much; you want them to retain some of their texture.

To keep the mixture pliable while you work, fill a large pan (or your sink) with about an inch of hot water and place your pot of cornflake mixture into it. This gentle warmth will prevent the mixture from hardening too quickly, giving you ample time to shape all your wreaths.

Step 6: Shape and Decorate Your Wreaths

  1. Using a medium cookie scoop or about two tablespoonfuls of the cornflake mixture, drop portions onto your prepared parchment or wax paper.
  2. Allow the mixture to cool slightly – just enough so it’s manageable to touch but still warm and pliable. Grease your fingers lightly with a little butter; this will prevent the sticky mixture from adhering to your hands.
  3. Gently form each portion into a ball, then use your greased finger or the greased end of a wooden spoon to poke a hole in the center, shaping it into a classic wreath form.
  4. While the wreaths are still warm and slightly soft, decorate them! Press a few red cinnamon candies onto each wreath to resemble holly berries. I found it helpful to gently embed them slightly into the cornflakes to ensure they stick well.
  5. Finally, carefully press one of your prepared licorice bows onto each wreath. Its slight stickiness will help it adhere to the still-warm cornflake mixture.
  6. Repeat this process until you have completed every single holly wreath.

Step 7: Allow to Set

Let your adorable Christmas Wreath Cookies set at room temperature for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows them to firm up slightly and ensures they hold their shape beautifully.

Aren’t they absolutely adorable? These festive treats are sure to be a showstopper on your holiday dessert table!

Tips for Perfect No-Bake Christmas Wreaths

Achieving perfectly shaped and decorated Christmas Wreath Cookies is simple with a few helpful tips:

  • Work Quickly: The marshmallow mixture begins to set as it cools. Keeping the pot in a warm water bath helps, but it’s still best to work efficiently when shaping.
  • Grease Your Hands: Buttering your hands lightly before shaping each wreath is essential to prevent sticking and make the process much smoother. Re-grease as needed.
  • Even Coloring: Stir the green food coloring thoroughly to ensure a consistent, vibrant green hue throughout the mixture. Gel food coloring often provides a more intense color with less liquid.
  • Gentle Mixing: When adding cornflakes, fold them in gently to prevent too much crushing. You want distinct flakes for that wreath-like texture.
  • Customization is Key: Don’t limit yourself to cinnamon candies! Small red or white M&Ms, festive sprinkles, or even small silver edible pearls can be used as “berries” or decorative accents.
  • Size Matters: A medium cookie scoop ensures uniform sizes for your wreaths, making them look professionally made and ensuring even setting.
  • Storage of Decorations: If pre-making decorations, store them carefully. Licorice bows, as noted, are best made fresh on the day of assembly.

How to Store Your Festive Cornflake Christmas Wreath Cookies

Proper storage is key to keeping these delightful Christmas Wreath Cookies fresh and beautiful throughout the holiday season.

These festive wreaths can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To prevent them from sticking to each other and maintain their individual charm, I highly recommend separating the layers of cookies with sheets of parchment paper or wax paper.

A Note on Licorice Bows: As I mentioned earlier, some of the licorice bows I made the day before assembly broke or lost their shape in less than 24 hours. If you plan to store these cookies for the full 4 days, you might consider omitting the licorice bows during initial preparation. Instead, attach the bows just before serving for the freshest and most pristine appearance. Alternatively, make extra bows and replace any that become misshapen.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • 5 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons green food coloring
  • 4 cups cornflakes
  • Cinnamon Imperials or Cinnamon Red Hot candies (for decoration)
  • 10 single strands Twizzlers Pull N Peel Licorice, cut in half (for bows)

Instructions

  1. To start, form 20 licorice bows. It is important that you do this step first, as once you form the cookies, they may harden before you add the decorations and won’t stick properly.
  2. I used Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel Licorice, and divided them into single strands and then cut those in half. Create a small loop in one end, and then with your other hand push the loose end up, creating the second loop. Squeeze the center of the bow to make sure everything sticks together. (Refer to the picture in the main post for a visual guide). Place the bows onto a cookie sheet or clean work surface for easy access while you decorate the wreaths.
  3. Prepare a clean work surface by lining it with a sheet of parchment paper or waxed paper. Place a large saucepan or pot over medium heat, and melt the butter.
  4. Pour the marshmallows into the pot and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  5. Add the vanilla and green food coloring to the marshmallow mixture and mix until thoroughly combined and the color is even. Remove the pan from heat.
  6. Mix in the cornflakes and stir well until they are fully coated. Fill the sink or a large skillet with about an inch of hot water, and place the pot into the hot water to keep the mixture warm and pliable while you work.
  7. Using a medium cookie scoop or two tablespoons of cornflake mixture, drop it onto the parchment paper. Grease your fingers with some butter and allow the mixture to cool slightly (but remain pliable) before forming it into a ball. Poke a hole into the center with your finger or a greased wooden spoon handle and shape it into a wreath. Decorate each wreath with a few cinnamon candies and gently press a licorice bow onto it. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
