Our Journey: From Coastal Rhode Island to the Desert, and Finally, the Mountains of New Hampshire

Our roots run deep in New England. Mr. 365 and I are high school sweethearts, born and raised for the most part in Rhode Island, where we also began raising our three wonderful children. Life by the ocean was familiar and cherished, but in 2002, a yearning for change led us on an entirely different path: we packed up our lives and moved to the vast, arid landscapes of Arizona. The desert offered its own unique charm and challenges, a stark contrast to the lush greenery and historic charm of New England.

However, after years under the perpetual sun, a profound shift began to stir within us. We missed something fundamental – the rhythmic change of seasons. The vibrant greens of spring, the warm embrace of summer, the crisp, colorful tapestry of autumn, and the quiet beauty of a snowy winter. This longing became an undeniable pull, a whisper of the mountains calling us home. So, last August, we made another significant, even drastic, cross-country move. We traded the desert heat for the cool embrace of the Northern New Hampshire mountains, eager to see what this new chapter had in store. It was a leap of faith, a return to the East, and a pursuit of the seasonal splendor we deeply yearned for.

The Unmistakable Allure of New England Fall

New England has always held a special place in the hearts of travelers, especially during autumn. It’s a phenomenon that draws visitors from across the globe, eager to witness the annual transformation of its deciduous forests. These dedicated travelers are affectionately known as “leaf peepers,” and their enthusiasm is infectious. From late September through mid-October, the region buzzes with activity. Hotels, charming inns, and cozy bed and breakfasts fill to capacity, transforming quiet towns into bustling hubs of exploration and admiration. There’s a tangible excitement in the air, a collective appreciation for nature’s grand finale before winter’s hush.

While our usual content revolves around delicious baking, today’s focus is purely on inspiring awe. I sincerely hope you have had the chance to experience this natural wonder at least once in your lifetime. If not, consider this your urgent recommendation to add it to your ‘Bucket List’. What follows is merely a glimpse, a small fraction of the breathtaking beauty we’ve been privileged to witness and photograph during our first few weeks immersed in the magic of New Hampshire’s autumn.
