Essential Ingredients for Perfect Sprinkle Cupcakes
Creating these colorful sprinkle cupcakes from scratch requires a few basic baking staples. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need for both the cupcakes and the creamy vanilla frosting:
For the Funfetti Cupcakes:
- Unsalted Butter (Room Temperature): Using unsalted butter allows you to control the total salt content in your recipe. Room temperature butter creams beautifully with sugar, incorporating air for a light and fluffy batter.
- Granulated Sugar: Provides sweetness and helps create that desirable tender crumb.
- Large Eggs (Room Temperature): Eggs bind the ingredients, add richness, and contribute to the structure and moisture of the cupcakes. Room temperature eggs emulsify better with the butter and sugar.
- Cake Batter Flavor (or Pure Vanilla Extract): This special flavoring gives the cupcakes that authentic, beloved “birthday cake” taste. If unavailable, pure vanilla extract is a fantastic substitute for a classic vanilla flavor.
- All-Purpose Flour: The primary structural component of the cupcakes. Proper measuring is key – spoon and level, don’t scoop directly from the bag.
- Baking Powder: A leavening agent that helps the cupcakes rise, resulting in a light and airy texture.
- Kosher Salt: Enhances all the other flavors, balancing the sweetness and adding depth.
- Milk: Adds moisture and contributes to the overall tender texture of the cake.
- Nonpareil Sprinkles (or Jimmies): These are the stars of Funfetti! Nonpareils are small, round, colorful balls that hold their shape and color beautifully. Jimmies (rod-shaped sprinkles) are also a good option. Be sure to have extra for decorating!
For the Luxurious Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:
- Unsalted Butter (Room Temperature): The base of our rich and creamy frosting. As with the cupcakes, room temperature is crucial for a smooth consistency.
- Pure Vanilla Extract: Provides the classic, comforting vanilla flavor for the frosting.
- Powdered Sugar (Confectioners’ Sugar): Gives the frosting its sweetness and smooth, pipeable texture. Sifting it can help prevent lumps.
- Milk: Used in small amounts to achieve the perfect, spreadable consistency for your buttercream. You might need more or less depending on humidity and desired thickness.

Crafting Your Homemade Sprinkle Cupcakes: A Step-by-Step Guide
Making these delightful Funfetti cupcakes is a rewarding experience. Follow these steps for fluffy, moist results:
- Preparation is Key: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with festive cupcake liners. This ensures easy removal and a clean presentation.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of kosher salt. Whisking ensures these ingredients are evenly distributed, which is vital for an even rise.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or using an electric hand mixer, cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar on medium speed. Beat for about 3-4 minutes, or until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color. This step is crucial for incorporating air, which contributes to the cupcakes’ tender texture.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Incorporate the large eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully combined. Next, add the cake batter flavor (or vanilla extract) and mix thoroughly.
- Alternate Dry and Wet: Gradually add half of the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Then, slowly pour in the milk while continuing to mix on low. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a silicone spatula to ensure everything is incorporated. Finally, add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until the batter is just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to dense cupcakes.
- Fold in the Sprinkles: Gently fold in about half of your chosen nonpareil sprinkles using a spatula. Reserve the remaining sprinkles for decorating later.
- Fill and Bake: Divide the cupcake batter evenly among the 12 prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds of the way full. This allows room for the cupcakes to rise without overflowing. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool Completely: Allow the baked cupcakes to cool in the muffin pan for a few minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling thoroughly is essential before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
While your cupcakes are cooling, it’s the perfect time to prepare that irresistibly delicious and creamy Funfetti frosting!

How to Make the Dreamy Funfetti Buttercream Frosting
No birthday cupcakes are truly complete without a generous swirl of sweet, creamy frosting, expertly applied from a piping bag or spread with an offset spatula. For these delightful Funfetti Cupcakes, we’re making a classic vanilla buttercream frosting and topping it with even more confetti-colored sprinkles for maximum festive appeal!
- Cream the Butter: In a medium bowl, using your stand mixer or electric hand mixer, cream the softened unsalted butter until it is light, fluffy, and pale in color. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes on medium speed.
- Gradually Add Powdered Sugar: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until fully incorporated. Once all the sugar is added and the mixture is crumbly, increase the speed to medium and beat for another 2-3 minutes. This ensures a smooth, lump-free frosting.
- Add Vanilla: Beat in the pure vanilla extract until just combined.
- Adjust Consistency with Milk: If the frosting is too thick, add milk one teaspoon at a time until you reach a thick yet spreadable and pipeable consistency. If you accidentally add too much milk and the frosting becomes too thin, gradually add more powdered sugar until the desired thickness is achieved.
- Frost and Decorate: Once the cupcakes are completely cool, transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with your favorite tip (or use a small offset spatula). Frost each cupcake generously and immediately top with additional nonpareil sprinkles for that extra festive touch!

Pro Tips for Baking the BEST Homemade Funfetti Cupcakes
Learn from years of baking experience with these simple tips to ensure your homemade Funfetti Cupcakes turn out perfectly every time:
- Room Temperature Ingredients are Non-Negotiable: This is perhaps the most important tip for any baking project! Cold ingredients, especially butter and eggs, are much trickier to fully incorporate into the batter. This can lead to overmixing, which results in dense, tough cupcakes. For the best results, take your butter and eggs out of the refrigerator at least 30-60 minutes before you plan to start making this cupcake recipe. They should be soft to the touch (butter) and not cold (eggs).
- Cake Batter Flavor vs. Vanilla Extract: If you don’t have cake batter flavor on hand, pure vanilla extract is an excellent substitution. Your Funfetti Cupcakes will still taste wonderfully classic. Just note that the cake batter flavor often contains a yellow coloring, which contributes to the vibrant yellow hue of the cupcakes as pictured. Pure vanilla extract will result in a slightly whiter crumb.
- Measure Flour Correctly: Do not scoop flour directly from the bag with your measuring cup. This compacts the flour, leading to too much being added, which can result in dry cupcakes. Instead, use a spoon to fluff the flour, then spoon it into your measuring cup and level it off with a straight edge (like the back of a knife).
- Don’t Overfill the Cupcake Wells: Each well of your cupcake tin should be filled only about two-thirds of the way to the top. This allows the cupcakes enough room to rise beautifully as they bake, creating a relatively flat top that’s perfect for holding a generous swirl of frosting. Overfilling can lead to mushroom-shaped cupcakes or batter overflowing the liners.
- Avoid Overmixing the Batter: Once you’ve added the dry ingredients to the wet, mix only until just combined. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, making the cupcakes tough and chewy instead of light and tender. A few small lumps are perfectly fine!
- Cool Completely Before Frosting: Patience is a virtue when it comes to frosting! If you try to frost warm cupcakes, your beautiful buttercream will melt and slide right off. Ensure the cupcakes are completely cool to the touch before decorating.
- Storing Your Funfetti Cupcakes: Keep your frosted cupcakes tightly covered in an airtight container at room temperature. They are best enjoyed within 3-4 days for optimal taste and freshness. If storing unfrosted cupcakes, they can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or frozen for longer storage (thaw at room temperature before frosting).
Choosing the Best Sprinkles for Your Colorful Confetti Cupcakes
The type of sprinkles you choose plays a significant role in the final look and texture of your Funfetti cupcakes:
- Nonpareil Sprinkles: I highly recommend using colored nonpareil sprinkles for this cupcake recipe. Their small, spherical shape and hard candy shell mean they hold their color exceptionally well during baking, giving your homemade Funfetti Cupcakes that classic, vibrant birthday cake appearance. However, be mindful not to overmix the batter once they’ve been added, as excessive mixing can cause them to streak and potentially discolor the batter.
- Jimmie Sprinkles: The long, skinny sprinkles, commonly known as jimmies, are another excellent choice for baking directly into cupcakes. They also tend to hold their color and shape well.
- Avoid Sugar Sprinkles: Steer clear of simple sugar sprinkles or sanding sugar when mixing into the batter. These types of sprinkles will quickly dissolve and get absorbed into the batter, making them virtually invisible after baking. Save sugar sprinkles for decorating the tops of your frosted cupcakes!

- silicone spatula
- Mixer (stand or hand)
- piping bag
- piping tip
Ingredients
Funfetti Cupcakes
- ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon cake batter flavor (can substitute 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract if you’d like)
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- pinch of kosher salt
- ⅓ cup milk
- ⅓ cup colored nonpareil or colored Jimmie sprinkles, plus additional for decorating.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk (if needed)
Instructions
Funfetti Cupcakes
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and the pinch of salt.
- Cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl for about 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating completely after each addition. Add cake batter flavoring and mix well.
- Add half of the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Slowly pour in the milk while mixing on low. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl, and add the remaining dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the ⅓ cup of nonpareils. Evenly distribute the batter between the 12 muffin cups.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes. After cooling a few minutes in the pan, transfer cupcakes to a wire rack and cool completely before frosting.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
- With a mixer, cream the butter in a medium bowl until light and creamy.
- Slowly add the sugar while mixing on low. After thoroughly combined, slowly increase speed to medium and add the vanilla. Beat for 3 minutes, scraping down the sides and bottom of bowl as needed.
- If the desired consistency is too thick, add the tablespoon of milk, but do so 1 teaspoon at a time because you may not need the entire amount. If frosting is too thin, gradually add more powdered sugar until you’ve reached your desired thickness.
- Frost cupcakes and top with additional sprinkles or nonpareils.
Notes
Note when using pure vanilla extract, the cupcakes will be a bit whiter in color. If using the cake batter flavoring, they will be yellow as pictured because of the extract coloring. Also, know that when you add the nonpareils and mix them in, they will most likely streak the batter. If you prefer this not to happen, you can substitute the nonpareils for colored jimmie sprinkles, which are less prone to streaking.
