An Anniversary Lunch in Phoenix: St. Francis Delivers Culinary Delights
Before our big Napa adventure, we kicked off our anniversary day with a delightful lunch right here in Phoenix. We decided to try St. Francis, a local restaurant we’d heard wonderful things about but had never visited. The anticipation of experiencing a new culinary spot on such a special day added an extra layer of enjoyment to our outing. And let me tell you, St. Francis did not disappoint!
The ambiance was inviting, with a warm and contemporary feel that made us instantly comfortable. The menu offered a wonderful array of fresh, thoughtfully prepared dishes, making our choices wonderfully difficult in the best possible way. After much deliberation, I settled on their Rice Bowl with Seven Vegetables – a vibrant, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying dish packed with fresh produce and delightful textures. Mr. 365, ever a fan of a hearty classic, chose the French Onion Burger, which came perfectly cooked and brimming with savory goodness. Both our main courses were outstanding, showcasing the kitchen’s commitment to quality ingredients and expert execution.
Of course, no anniversary lunch is complete without dessert! We shared their Toffee Pudding, a rich, decadent treat that provided the perfect sweet ending to our meal. It was a symphony of caramel and warmth, leaving us completely content. Our first visit to St. Francis was a resounding success, offering not just delicious food but also a lovely, relaxed setting for our anniversary celebration. We are already looking forward to returning and exploring more of their menu.
The Uninvited Anniversary Guest: A Garage Encounter with an Arizona Scorpion Family
Feeling wonderfully full and happy after our celebratory lunch, we made our way home, reminiscing about the meal and our upcoming Napa plans. As we pulled into the garage and stepped out of the car, preparing to head into the house, our pleasant reverie was abruptly shattered. There, on the garage wall near the door, was a sight that instantly sent a shiver down my spine: a rather large scorpion. My initial reaction was a sudden gasp, a mix of surprise and unease, as this one seemed notably bigger than the typical scorpions we occasionally spot.
But the true shock came upon closer inspection. Mr. 365, ever vigilant, pointed more intently, his voice tinged with a blend of disbelief and alarm. “Wait a minute,” he exclaimed, “there are babies on her back!”
YIKES!!! The sight was both fascinating and undeniably unsettling. A large, formidable mother scorpion, meticulously carrying a dozen or so tiny scorplings, clinging tightly to her back. It was a vivid tableau of desert wildlife, right there in our seemingly safe garage. While a part of me, the curious nature-lover, found the scene incredibly cool from a biological perspective, another much louder part of me, the homeowner and lover of creature-free living spaces, was completely freaked out!

Scorpions and Scorplings: A Fascinating (and Frightening) Phenomenon
Living in Arizona means occasional encounters with scorpions are a reality. We’re generally used to them, and I can usually calmly scoop one into a cup for relocation. However, this particular encounter was different. The sheer number of tiny lives clinging to the mother’s back amplified the situation considerably. It truly hammered home the fascinating, albeit somewhat terrifying, life cycle of these desert dwellers.
Did you know that female scorpions, after giving birth to live young (not eggs!), carry their offspring, called scorplings, on their backs? This maternal care is crucial for the survival of the fragile young, protecting them from predators and allowing them to molt their first exoskeletons in relative safety before they venture out on their own. This can be for several days to weeks, depending on the species and environmental conditions. The species we most commonly encounter in Arizona, particularly the bark scorpion, is known for this behavior. While scientifically intriguing, witnessing it up close and personal within feet of your front door is an experience that instantly elevates the adrenaline!
The Great Scorpion Relocation: A Mother’s Dilemma
Despite my initial awe at this natural wonder, the logical part of my brain quickly took over: this scorpion family, as interesting as they were, could not stay in our garage, nor could they be left to wander freely in our immediate vicinity. Mr. 365, with admirable bravery, carefully scooped the entire family – mama scorpion and all her little ones – into a sturdy cup. His first thought was to simply place them in the front yard, a safe distance from the garage door, offering them a chance to find a new home in the natural desert landscape.
Minutes later, however, while sitting safely inside the house and contemplating the thought of a dozen or more scorpions potentially making their way back to our home, my mind started to race. The “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy quickly dissolved. The idea of this entire family, even if tiny, eventually dispersing and potentially seeking refuge in our walls or other nooks and crannies, began to make me increasingly squeamish. While I typically don’t get overly freaked out by individual scorpions and can often manage their removal quite calmly, the image of this many, with their determined mama, was genuinely unsettling. It stirred a peculiar conflict within me: the mother in me appreciated the familial bond and wanted them to stay together, but the homeowner in me wanted them far, far away from our property.
So, armed with a fresh cup and a sturdy piece of paper, I ventured back out to the front yard. She had moved slightly, but I quickly spotted the distinctive silhouette of the mother and her precious cargo. With a renewed surge of determination (and perhaps a tiny shudder), I carefully gathered them up once more. This time, I journeyed a bit further, down the street and behind a robust stone wall, placing them firmly within the more expansive desert terrain. The hope is that this new location is sufficiently removed from our home, and mama scorpion, with all her formidable navigational skills, won’t remember her way back “home” to our garage.
A Rare Sight: Community Reactions and Moving Forward
Later that day, I couldn’t resist sharing our unique anniversary story on my personal Facebook page. Living in Arizona, many of my friends and acquaintances have their own scorpion tales, ranging from casual sightings to more dramatic encounters. However, what was truly striking was the overwhelming consensus among those who commented: while seeing scorpions is common, almost none of them had ever witnessed a mother carrying so many babies on her back! This reinforced just how unusual and, indeed, memorable our anniversary encounter truly was.
While it made for an undeniably captivating story and a fascinating glimpse into the natural world, I can definitively say that I don’t feel the need to see a repeat performance anytime soon. One scorpion family encounter, especially on our 25th anniversary, is quite enough to last a lifetime!
With the desert drama behind us, my focus is happily returning to the more delicious aspects of life. Tomorrow, you can expect us to be back to our regularly scheduled programming, all about the food, the flavors, and the joy of cooking and dining. But for now, here’s to memorable anniversaries, unexpected wildlife encounters, and dreams of Napa Valley! Don’t forget to share those recommendations!
