This German Apple Pie was a signature dish of my Aunt Jeanne, my mother’s wonderful sister. I vividly remember trying to rush everyone through dinner, my eyes already fixed on the pie, eagerly anticipating my first (and usually second!) piece. It was, without a doubt, the undisputed highlight of every holiday meal for me. Her pie wasn’t just dessert; it was an event, a source of delightful anticipation that always delivered on its promise of sweet satisfaction.
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of recreating this magical pie for my own family. To my delight, they’ve embraced it with the same enthusiasm I’ve always had. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see a recipe continue its journey, bringing joy to new generations. And now, sharing this cherished family secret with you makes the experience even more special.

What makes this Apple Cream Pie truly stand out is its incredible simplicity, coupled with a depth of flavor that belies its ease of preparation. It’s absolutely delicious whether you opt for a homemade pie crust, which adds a touch of rustic charm, or a convenient store-bought one, perfect for busy bakers. One of my favorite aspects is the way the cinnamon-sugar mixture caramelizes and slightly hardens on the crust as it bakes, creating a delightful textural contrast and an extra layer of sweetness that is truly mouthwatering.
My Aunt Jeanne always had a secret touch: she’d add a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon directly into her homemade pie dough. While I often skip this step for simplicity, and the pie still tastes amazing, it’s a lovely personal flourish to consider if you’re making your crust from scratch. When it comes to apples, feel free to use your preferred variety. I’ve experimented with many over the years, but I consistently return to MacIntosh apples. Their texture and flavor profile when baked are simply perfect for this pie, softening beautifully and infusing the dessert with a wonderfully tart-sweet essence that complements the creamy filling.
Why You’ll Fall in Love with This German Apple Cream Pie
This recipe isn’t just another apple pie; it’s a culinary experience waiting to happen. Here’s why it deserves a spot in your recipe collection:
- Uncomplicated Perfection: From prep to plate, this pie is designed for ease. Even beginner bakers can achieve spectacular results, making it an ideal choice when you want a show-stopping dessert without the fuss.
- A Unique Flavor Profile: The blend of cinnamon-sugar-coated apples with a generous pour of heavy cream creates a rich, decadent filling that’s unlike traditional apple pies. The cream bakes into a custardy layer, adding an incredible depth of flavor and moisture.
- Best Served Chilled: While many pies are enjoyed warm, this Apple Cream Pie truly shines when cold. Chilling allows the flavors to meld beautifully and the creamy texture to set, delivering a refreshing and satisfying dessert experience.
- Generational Appeal: This recipe has been passed down through our family for decades, enchanting taste buds across generations. It’s a testament to its timeless appeal and comforting familiarity.
- Versatile for Any Occasion: Whether it’s a casual family dinner, a festive holiday gathering, or a potluck with friends, this pie fits every bill. Its year-round popularity speaks volumes about its universal charm.
Essential Ingredients for Your Easiest Apple Pie Recipe
Gathering the right components is the first step to creating this unforgettable dessert. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Unbaked Pie Crust: One 9-inch pie shell, either store-bought for convenience or homemade for that extra personal touch. No need to pre-bake!
- Medium Apples (8 count): My aunt’s original recipe called for six, but I’ve found that increasing it to eight medium apples truly fills the crust out beautifully, offering a more generous and satisfying apple-to-crust ratio. My family certainly praises the extra apple goodness! My personal preference for this pie is MacIntosh, known for their soft texture and balanced sweetness when baked. However, feel free to use your favorite baking apples.
- Lemon Juice (1 tbsp.): A crucial addition that prevents your sliced apples from browning too quickly, maintaining their fresh appearance and a hint of bright flavor.
- Packed Light Brown Sugar (1 cup): Provides a deep, molasses-rich sweetness and contributes to the wonderful caramelized crust.
- All-Purpose Flour (¼ cup): Acts as a thickening agent for the apple filling, ensuring it’s not too watery.
- Ground Cinnamon (½ tsp.): The quintessential spice for apple pie, offering warmth and aromatic depth.
- Kosher Salt (⅛ tsp.): A pinch of salt enhances all the other flavors, balancing the sweetness and brightening the spice.
- Heavy Whipping Cream (1 cup): The star ingredient that gives this pie its signature creamy, rich texture and luxurious mouthfeel.

Expert Tips for Crafting the Perfect Apple Cream Pie
Follow these insights to ensure your Apple Cream Pie turns out perfectly every time:
- Choosing Your Pie Crust:
- No Pre-Baking Needed: A significant time-saver, there’s no need to blind bake your pie crust for this recipe. Simply place the unbaked dough into your pie plate.
- Homemade vs. Store-Bought: I often use a store-bought refrigerated pie crust to save time, and it works wonderfully. However, if you’re inclined to bake from scratch, consider my Aunt Jeanne’s delightful trick: add ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon to your pie dough for an extra layer of warm flavor. This simple addition elevates the entire pie experience.
- Selecting and Preparing Apples:
- Best Apple Varieties for Baking: Many apples shine in baked goods. For this pie, I particularly favor MacIntosh because they soften beautifully and offer a delightful balance of tartness and sweetness that pairs exquisitely with the cream. Other excellent choices include Cortland, Braeburn, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith (for a tarter pie), Jonagold, or Honeycrisp.
- Apple Cut Matters: While some apple recipes, like an apple ginger galette, call for chopped apples, and others, such as fried apple rings, use slices, my aunt’s original recipe for this cream pie specifically instructs quartering the apples. I’ve always followed this method, not just for tradition but because I appreciate the substantial, satisfying apple pieces it yields. They offer a distinct texture compared to thinner slices or smaller cuts.
- Even Distribution: If you quarter your apples as directed, arrange them carefully and evenly around the pie plate. This ensures every slice of pie has a generous portion of fruit. Don’t worry too much about small gaps; the apples will cook down and fill any empty spaces, creating a wonderfully full pie.
- The Baking Sheet Advantage: Before adding your apple filling to the crust, always place your pie plate on a rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. This simple step is a lifesaver for cleanup! On occasion, the heavy cream can bubble over during baking, and the foil catches any drips, saving your oven from sticky messes.
- Pouring the Cream Thoughtfully: This is a critical step. Pour the heavy cream slowly and gently over the apples. This technique allows the cream to seep down and cover as many apples as possible, rather than running off the side of an apple quarter and potentially over the pie plate onto your baking sheet. Patience here ensures even cream distribution.
- Chill for Optimal Enjoyment: The pie can be served after it has cooled completely or even slightly warm, but our family has a firm preference: we *never* eat it warm! This pie is absolutely divine after it has been refrigerated for a few hours and is thoroughly cold. Perhaps it’s the way the heavy cream sets, or how the flavors fully meld and intensify when chilled, but the cold temperature transforms it into an incredibly refreshing and uniquely satisfying dessert. Trust us on this one – cold is best!
- Storage: Cover any leftover pie loosely with plastic wrap or foil and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep well for 3-4 days, tasting even better the next day!
What Should You Serve with This Exceptional Pie?
My honest answer? Nothing at all! Seriously. When enjoyed cold, this Apple Cream Pie is a complete culinary experience in itself. It’s so rich, flavorful, and perfectly textured that it truly doesn’t require the traditional scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream that often accompanies a warm slice of apple pie.
However, please don’t let my personal preference deter you from adding that extra indulgence if it brings you joy! A scoop of your favorite ice cream or a elegant swirl of whipped cream can certainly be a delightful addition. Yet, I believe this pie is so spectacularly perfect as it is that topping it with anything might just, in fact, diminish its inherent greatness.

I enjoy apples year-round in all forms, especially in comforting desserts like various apple crisps. You might love this indulgent bacon caramel apple crisp or this incredibly easy skillet apple crisp.
Of course, you can never go wrong with a classic apple pie, particularly a decadent French Apple Pie! Piled high with apples and crowned with a delightful brown sugar streusel, it’s guaranteed to have everyone requesting a second slice.
Another family favorite around here are these tempting caramel apple cheesecake bars. We also adore classic caramel apples, but I find myself even more partial to the creative inside-out caramel apples!

- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp. cinnamon

- Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack. For the best flavor and texture, refrigerate the pie for at least a couple of hours before serving. It truly tastes best when completely cold.
Notes
If you choose to make your pie crust from scratch, incorporate ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon into the pie dough for an added layer of warm spice that beautifully complements the filling.
