A Bittersweet Celebration: Remembering a Dear Friend and a Sweet Legacy

Today marks a truly bittersweet day, one filled with both profound remembrance and a deep appreciation for the joy that life, and indeed, chocolate, can bring. It’s a day we would have spent celebrating the 50th birthday of a cherished friend, a vibrant soul whose presence is deeply missed. While she is no longer with us to share in the festivities, her spirit, her incredible recipes, and her invaluable legacy continue to inspire.

Joan Hayes, the heart and soul behind the beloved blog, Chocolate, Chocolate and More.

My very dear friend, whom I often thought of as a “long lost sister” and a fellow blogging enthusiast, Joan Hayes, the brilliant mind behind the incredible blog, Chocolate, Chocolate and More, tragically passed away last year. Her sudden departure, only weeks after her 49th birthday, was due to a massive heart attack. Joan’s passing served as a stark and painful reminder of how precious and fragile life is, and it highlighted a critical health awareness point that she would have wanted everyone to understand.

Understanding Heart Attack Symptoms in Women: A Vital Lifesaving Message

It is crucial to remember that the signs and symptoms of a heart attack can manifest differently in women compared to men. This distinction is not widely known, and recognizing these differences can be a matter of life and death. While men often experience the classic crushing chest pain, women may present with more subtle symptoms such as shortness of breath, pain in the jaw, back, neck or arms, nausea, vomiting, and extreme fatigue. These symptoms can sometimes be misinterpreted as less urgent issues, leading to delayed treatment. Please, take a moment to educate yourself and your loved ones on these vital indicators. You can find comprehensive information from the American Heart Association here. Sharing this knowledge is a small but powerful way to honor Joan’s memory and potentially save lives.

These Chocolate Overload Loaded Brownies are designed for pure indulgence. Starting with a convenient box mix, they are transformed into an extraordinary dessert with an abundance of chopped candy bars, luscious hot fudge, and a final flourish of chocolate frosting. This recipe is incredibly adaptable, allowing you to use your favorite candy bars for a truly personalized treat. Perfect for potlucks, parties, or simply satisfying that intense chocolate craving, these brownies are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser and a memorable sweet experience.

Ingredients

  • 1 box brownie mix (Duncan Hines is a great choice for consistent results)
  • Ingredients called for on the brownie mix box (typically eggs, oil, and water)
  • 1 ½ cups chopped candy (a delightful mix of Snickers, Milky Way, and Reese’s offers a variety of textures and flavors)
  • ½ cup Hot Fudge Sauce (for that extra layer of chocolatey richness)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on your brownie mix box. Prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan by lightly greasing the bottom with cooking spray to ensure easy release.
  2. Begin by chopping all your chosen candy bars into delightful chunks. In a large bowl, prepare the brownie mix according to the package directions, then gently fold in the chopped candy. Spread the rich batter as evenly as possible into your prepared baking pan.
  3. Warm the hot fudge sauce lightly in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes until it becomes easily pourable. Drizzle this warm, decadent sauce generously over the brownie batter. Using the blade of a knife, gently swirl the hot fudge into the brownies, creating beautiful marbled patterns without fully mixing it in.
  4. Bake the brownies according to the time recommended on the box. Due to the added deliciousness of candy and fudge, you might need to extend the baking time by a few extra minutes to ensure they are perfectly set and gooey.
  5. Allow the brownies to cool completely before attempting to cut them. For clean, neat squares, a plastic knife works wonders, preventing sticking and crumbling.

A Legacy of Sweetness and Friendship: Why Joan’s Blog Still Matters

When Joan passed away, the food blogosphere felt an immense void. She was more than just a fellow blogger; she was a true cheerleader for so many of us, a trusted confidante, a shrewd business mind who wasn’t afraid to give honest advice, a no-holds-barred mentor, and above all, a loyal and very dear friend. Her generosity of spirit and passion for sharing delicious recipes were infectious.

I recall a special memory of Joan and me on a cruise earlier last year. Despite her profound love for chocolate, she never turned down any dessert. It was on that cruise that she discovered and absolutely fell in love with Coconut Ranger Cookies. Even without chocolate, these cookies became a beloved treat, a testament to her adventurous palate and joy in simple pleasures. Many bloggers shared their thoughts, heartfelt tributes, and, of course, countless chocolate recipes to honor her memory, and it felt important to me to highlight those cookies as well.

Cherished memories: Joan and Lynne, friends and blogging colleagues.

Most importantly, there remains a HUGE, irreplaceable hole in the hearts of her three beautiful children – her son CJ, and her daughters Cassie and Grace. As many who have experienced such a loss know, it’s a void that can and will never truly be filled. This leads me to the next part of this tribute, which is profoundly important to me, and was equally so to Joan.

Supporting Joan’s Children: A Call to Action

I am deliberately not posting Joan’s “Chocolate Overload Loaded Brownies” recipe directly on this page. The primary reason for this is to drive as many readers as possible directly to her blog, Chocolate, Chocolate and More, for the direct benefit of her three children. The advertisements on her website continue to generate income for them, a provision that Joan was fiercely adamant about ensuring should she pass away unexpectedly. This was a testament to her foresight and her boundless love for her family.

It is rare for me to ask you to click away from my site for a recipe, but Joan was far too dear a friend for me to do anything else. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that she would have done the same for my children, and it is an honor to uphold her wishes and her legacy in this way.

Joan was an incredible advocate for proactive planning, constantly impressing upon all of us the critical importance of having additional administrators for our blogs and Facebook pages, preparing clear directions for our loved ones in our wills regarding our digital assets, and discussing these crucial matters with our lawyers and accountants to protect our families should the unexpected occur. Ironically, the person who was the most prepared needed these very precautions the soonest. Her wisdom in this regard continues to be a guiding light for many in the online community.
