What is Buffalo Sauce? Understanding the Iconic Flavor

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk about the star ingredient: Buffalo sauce. Many people associate this tangy, spicy condiment with buffalo wings, but its versatility extends far beyond. In its most fundamental form, buffalo sauce is a simple yet incredibly flavorful blend of hot sauce (traditionally Frank’s RedHot) and melted butter. This combination creates a rich, smooth sauce that tones down the raw heat of the hot sauce while adding a delicious buttery depth.

Often, garlic powder or other seasonings are added to enhance its savory profile, transforming it into an irresistible dip, marinade, or condiment. The “buffalo” in its name has nothing to do with the majestic animal; rather, it pays homage to its birthplace: Buffalo, New York, where it was popularized at the Anchor Bar in the 1960s. This regional specialty quickly became a global sensation, beloved for its distinctive kick and comforting richness.

While you can certainly craft your own buffalo sauce from scratch, for this recipe, we’re keeping things wonderfully simple. A high-quality store-bought buffalo sauce will work perfectly, saving you time without compromising on flavor. Just pick up your favorite brand from the grocery store – this one is a popular choice for its authentic taste!

Key Ingredients for Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Crafting these delectable sliders requires a handful of accessible ingredients that come together to create a symphony of flavors and textures. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need to gather:

  • Shredded, Cooked Chicken: The foundation of our filling. A store-bought rotisserie chicken is a fantastic shortcut, providing tender, flavorful chicken with minimal effort. You can also cook and shred your own chicken breasts or thighs.
  • Buffalo Sauce: The heart of the flavor. Choose your favorite brand for that signature tangy heat.
  • Ranch Dressing: This adds a creamy, cooling element that perfectly complements the spice of the buffalo sauce, creating that irresistible buffalo ranch combination.
  • Old Bay Seasoning: A unique blend of herbs and spices that adds a depth of savory flavor, often associated with seafood but surprisingly delicious with chicken.
  • Garlic Powder: Enhances the savory notes and adds a subtle aromatic quality to the chicken mixture.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: Essential for seasoning to taste and balancing all the flavors.
  • Shredded Pepper Jack Cheese: For a delightful kick and incredible meltiness. If you prefer a milder flavor, Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese are excellent substitutes.
  • King’s Hawaiian Rolls: These sweet, soft rolls are the secret weapon for sliders. Their slight sweetness perfectly offsets the spicy chicken, and their interconnected nature makes assembly a breeze. Any other slider bun can work, but Hawaiian rolls are highly recommended for the best experience.
  • Melted Butter: Used for the irresistible topping that gives the rolls a golden, savory crust.
  • Dried Parsley: Adds a touch of herbaceous freshness and a beautiful visual appeal to the butter topping.

How to Make Irresistible Buffalo Chicken Sliders: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making these Buffalo Chicken Sliders is a straightforward process that yields incredibly delicious results. Follow these simple steps for a perfect batch every time:

  1. Prepare Your Baking Dish and Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. This ensures your sliders won’t stick and cook evenly.
  2. Create the Flavorful Chicken Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, and a dash of salt and pepper to taste. Mix everything thoroughly until the chicken is completely coated in the creamy, spicy sauce. This is where all the fantastic flavors meld together!
  3. Prepare the Rolls: Carefully remove the King’s Hawaiian rolls from their package, keeping them intact as a single block. Using a long, serrated knife, slice the entire block of rolls horizontally, separating the tops from the bottoms. You’ll end up with two sheets: one for the tops and one for the bottoms. Place the bottom halves of the rolls into your prepared baking dish, cut side facing up.
  4. Layer the Sliders: Evenly distribute about 3/4 cup of the shredded pepper jack cheese over the bottom layer of the rolls. This creates a delicious, cheesy base. Next, spoon the buffalo chicken mixture over the cheese, spreading it out evenly to cover all the rolls. Sprinkle the remaining cheese generously over the chicken layer. Finally, carefully place the top halves of the rolls over the chicken and cheese mixture.

The Golden Butter Topping

The savory butter topping is the final touch that transforms these sliders from great to absolutely phenomenal, giving them a beautiful golden-brown crust and extra flavor.

  1. Prepare the Topping: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Start with 30 seconds, then stir. If it’s not fully melted, continue microwaving in 10-second intervals, stirring after each, until it’s completely liquid. Stir in the dried parsley until well combined.
  2. Brush and Bake: Gently brush the entire tops of the assembled rolls with all of the butter mixture. Be sure to get into all the crevices for maximum flavor and an even golden crust. Bake the sliders in your preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is wonderfully melted and bubbly, and the tops of the rolls are a beautiful, darker golden brown.

Once baked, let them cool for a few minutes before serving. This allows the cheese to set slightly, making them easier to pull apart and enjoy. Get ready for an explosion of flavor in every bite!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Here are answers to some common questions about making and serving these delicious sliders:

Do I have to use rotisserie chicken for these Chicken Sliders?

Absolutely not! While a rotisserie chicken is a fantastic time-saver and delivers consistent flavor, you have several options for the shredded chicken component. You can easily use leftover cooked chicken from another recipe. Alternatively, you can cook and shred your own chicken breasts or thighs using your preferred method – whether that’s on the stovetop, in a slow cooker, or even quickly in a pressure cooker like an Instant Pot. Simply cook the chicken until it’s tender enough to shred, then toss it with the sauce ingredients as directed in the recipe. The key is to have finely shredded, moist chicken to absorb all that delicious buffalo ranch flavor.

Can I make these Buffalo Chicken Sliders ahead of time?

Yes, with a small caveat. For the best possible results, I recommend assembling and baking the sliders just before you plan to serve them. This prevents the rolls from becoming soggy, ensuring they retain their perfect soft-yet-golden texture. However, you can absolutely prepare the chicken filling ahead of time! Mix the shredded chicken with the buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, and seasonings, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. When you’re ready to bake, simply spread the pre-made filling onto the rolls, add the cheese, and bake as instructed. This makes party prep much easier!

How do I store these slider sandwiches?

If you happen to have any leftovers (which is rare!), you can store these buffalo chicken sliders in an airtight container or by covering the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Keep them in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Be aware that the bottoms of the rolls may start to get a bit soggy over time, so I find them to be at their absolute best within 24 hours of baking. You can enjoy them cold, but for a more satisfying experience, I highly recommend reheating them. A quick 60-90 seconds in the microwave usually does the trick, or you can pop them back in the oven at a low temperature until warmed through.

Can I adjust the spice level?

Absolutely! The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. To make them spicier, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the chicken mixture, use a hotter buffalo sauce, or even drizzle a little extra hot sauce on top before serving. For a milder version, opt for a mild buffalo sauce and consider reducing the amount. You could also mix in a bit more ranch dressing to increase creaminess and further temper the heat.

Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Created by: Lynne Feifer

Course: Appetizer

Cuisine: American

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Servings: 12 sliders

Buffalo Chicken Sliders are the perfect party food for any game day! Shredded chicken smothered in a creamy buffalo ranch sauce, topped with cheese, and sandwiched between sweet Hawaiian rolls.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken (I like to use a rotisserie chicken)
  • ¼ cup Buffalo sauce
  • ¼ cup ranch dressing
  • ¼ teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 ounces freshly shredded pepper jack cheese (about 1 1/2 cups) – Can substitute Monterey Jack or cheddar.
  • 12 count King’s Hawaiian Rolls

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 ½ tablespoons dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), and prepare a 9 X 13-inch baking dish by spraying it with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the shredded chicken, Buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper (if using). Mix well.
  3. Remove the rolls from the package in one piece. Using a serrated knife, slice the rolls in half so that you have a sheet of 12 tops separated from the 12 bottoms. Put the bottom halves into the prepared baking dish with the cut side up.
  4. Evenly distribute 3/4 cup of the pepper jack cheese over the bottom of the rolls. Next, place the Buffalo chicken mixture on top of the cheese, being sure to spread it out to all the sides. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and place the top halves of the rolls on top of the chicken mixture.
  5. In a small microwaveable bowl, melt the butter for 30 seconds. Remove, and stir. Melt in additional 10-second increments if needed, until completely melted, stirring in between. Add the parsley, and mix well. Gently brush the tops of the rolls with all of the butter mixture.
  6. Bake the rolls for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the tops have become a darker golden brown.
