Crafting Your Perfect Taco Braid: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a visually appealing and delicious Taco Braid is simpler than you might think, especially with a few helpful tips. The process is designed to be straightforward, leveraging the convenience of refrigerated pizza dough to make prep a breeze. Let’s walk through each step to ensure your Taco Braid is a resounding success.

First, prepare your baking surface. Lay a sheet of parchment paper onto a rimmed baking sheet. This crucial step prevents sticking and makes transferring your braided masterpiece from your work surface to the oven incredibly easy. Trust us, learning this lesson the hard way is not recommended!

Refrigerated pizza dough rolled out onto parchment paper, ready for the next steps of slicing and filling to create the Taco Braid.

Next, carefully unroll your package of refrigerated pizza dough onto the prepared parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll the dough out until it measures approximately 10 x 15 inches. This size provides the perfect canvas for your fillings and allows for even braiding. With a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, make even slices into the long sides of the dough. These slices should be about 1 ½ inches thick and extend about 3 inches in towards the center. The middle section, left unsliced, is where your delicious taco filling will reside.

Pizza dough with parallel slices cut into the sides, creating strips ready for braiding, with space in the center for the taco filling.

Now comes the fun part: filling and braiding! Begin by spreading your perfectly seasoned ground beef mixture down the center strip of the dough. Be generous, but ensure you leave a small margin at the top and bottom. Over the ground beef, sprinkle ¾ cup of your chosen shredded cheese and then scatter the diced tomatoes. These vibrant additions will melt beautifully and add bursts of flavor.

To start the braid, fold up one end of the dough (either the top or bottom) over the filling. Then, take the first two sliced strips from the sides and fold them inwards, crisscrossing them over the folded end to secure the filling. Continue this process, alternating strips from each side, folding them over the filling in an overlapping, braided pattern. This creates a secure, beautiful encasing for your taco goodness. Stop just before you reach the last two strips at the opposite end. Fold up the remaining end of the dough, and then wrap the final two side strips over it, completely sealing your Taco Braid.

Finally, brush the entire surface of the braided dough with melted butter. This not only gives the crust a beautiful golden sheen but also adds a rich flavor. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of shredded cheese over the top, which will melt into a delectable crust as it bakes. Transfer the parchment paper with your carefully crafted Taco Braid to the rimmed baking sheet, and it’s ready for the oven!

Variations and Serving Suggestions for Your Taco Braid

While the classic ground beef Taco Braid is undeniably delicious, this recipe offers endless possibilities for customization. Don’t hesitate to get creative and tailor it to your family’s preferences or whatever ingredients you have on hand.

Exciting Filling Variations:

  • Chicken Taco Braid: Swap out ground beef for shredded seasoned chicken. Rotisserie chicken works wonderfully for an even quicker prep time.
  • Vegetarian Delight: For a meatless option, use seasoned black beans, corn, bell peppers, and onions as your primary filling. A sprinkle of crumbled feta or cotija cheese would be a fantastic addition.
  • Spicy Kick: Incorporate diced jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne pepper into your taco meat for an extra fiery flavor. Pepper jack cheese can also ramp up the heat.
  • Breakfast Taco Braid: Imagine seasoned scrambled eggs, crumbled sausage or bacon, and cheddar cheese wrapped in that flaky crust for a brunch sensation!

Perfect Accompaniments and Toppings:

Once your Taco Braid emerges from the oven, golden and fragrant, the fun doesn’t stop there. Just like traditional tacos, the toppings are what truly complete the experience. Here are some of our favorite ways to serve it:

  • Fresh Greens: A generous topping of crisp shredded Romaine lettuce adds a refreshing crunch and vibrant color.
  • Diced Tomatoes & Onions: Extra fresh tomatoes and finely diced red onions provide a burst of freshness and mild sharpness.
  • Creamy Goodness: A dollop of cool sour cream or a swirl of creamy avocado crema is essential for balancing the rich flavors.
  • Salsa & Guacamole: Offer a variety of your favorite salsas – mild, medium, or spicy – and a bowl of homemade guacamole for dipping.
  • Hot Sauce: For those who love an extra kick, a selection of hot sauces should be readily available.
  • Cilantro: Freshly chopped cilantro is a classic taco topping that brightens the entire dish.

This Taco Braid is not just a meal; it’s a canvas for your culinary imagination. Feel free to mix and match to discover your ultimate favorite combination!

Total Time: 45 minutes

This super easy Taco Braid features ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning, covered with shredded cheese and fresh tomatoes, all wrapped in a braided pizza dough. It’s a fun, delicious, and different way to eat a taco, perfect for Taco Tuesdays, game days, or any family meal!

Yields: 6 servings

Equipment

  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling Pin
  • Rimmed baking sheet
  • Large skillet
  • Knife or pizza cutter

Ingredients

  • 1 refrigerated pizza crust (such as Pillsbury)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 1 lb. ground beef (80/20 or 90/10 lean)
  • 3 tablespoons Homemade Taco Seasoning
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup Fiesta Blend shredded cheese, divided (or your favorite cheddar/Mexican blend)
  • 1 large tomato, diced (plus additional for topping, if desired)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cups chopped Romaine lettuce (for serving)
  • Sour cream and taco sauce for serving (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190°C). Prepare a rimmed baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper for easy transfer and cleanup.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes, or until softened and translucent.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it is fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
  4. Stir in the water and the homemade taco seasoning. Mix well until all the beef is coated. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat.
  5. Transfer the parchment paper to your work surface. Unroll the refrigerated pizza dough onto the parchment. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough into a rectangle approximately 10 x 15 inches.
  6. With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, make parallel slices down both long sides of the dough. Each slice should be about 1 ½ inches thick and extend 3 inches in from the edge, leaving a solid 4-inch wide strip down the center for the filling.
  7. Spoon the seasoned ground beef mixture evenly down the center strip of the dough. Leave about an inch of dough clear at the top and bottom ends.
  8. Sprinkle ¾ cup of the shredded cheese over the ground beef, followed by the diced tomato.
  9. To braid: Fold the bottom (or top) end of the dough up over the filling. Then, take the first two sliced strips (one from each side) and cross them over the folded end, pressing gently to secure. Continue alternating strips, crossing them over each other in a braided pattern, working your way up the dough until you reach the last two strips.
  10. Fold the remaining end of the dough up over the filling, then wrap the last two side strips over it to completely seal the braid.
  11. Gently brush the top and sides of the braided dough with the melted butter. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of shredded cheese over the top.
  12. Carefully transfer the parchment paper with the Taco Braid to your prepared rimmed baking sheet.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  14. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
  15. Garnish with chopped Romaine lettuce, additional diced tomato, and more cheese, if desired. Serve warm with sour cream and taco sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your fun and flavorful Taco Braid!
