Returning Home: A Moving Tale and the Quest for Comfort
Hello again, dear readers! It feels wonderful to be back and connected with all of you after what has been a truly whirlwind couple of weeks. Your continued support, through reading and sharing, has meant the world during my recent absence. Thank you for being the absolute best!
Life has been a bit of a chaotic adventure lately, marked by the unavoidable upheaval of moving. While it was just a short seven-minute journey across town, the process itself was anything but brief or simple. And if I haven’t mentioned it before, let me reiterate: I wholeheartedly dislike moving! The sheer exhaustion, coupled with the inevitable disorganization that engulfs a “new” house as boxes are unceremoniously “dumped” inside, is enough to test anyone’s patience. My meticulously planned system for placing boxes in their designated rooms often gives way to a living room overflowing with every imaginable possession, a testament to the chaos.
I readily admit, when it comes to packing and moving, I transform into a formidable control freak. It’s one of those aspects of life where my “anal” tendencies shine brightest. Beyond the packing, there’s the critical task of cleaning the new space. Unless a house is brand new, achieving my desired level of cleanliness feels like an endless quest. Even after a week of settling in, certain things still manage to make my skin crawl – like the master bathtub with its unappealing scratches and rust around the drain. While not a major issue, it certainly deters any thoughts of a relaxing soak. My daughter playfully called me a germaphobe the other night, and I suppose she’s not entirely wrong! The rattling garbage disposal, with a mystery object lodged inside, also remains a constant, unsettling reminder. You won’t catch me sticking my hand in there – not even with three layers of disposable gloves!
Add to this my peculiar aversion to sand, and you might start to understand the delightful complexities of my personality. It’s a wonder my husband, Mr. 365, hasn’t committed me yet after twenty-two years of marriage! His patience for my various idiosyncrasies is truly a gift, one for which I am incredibly grateful.
And if the moving stress wasn’t enough, Arizona has decided to turn up the heat, offering us unusually high humidity on top of sweltering 108-degree temperatures. It’s simply stifling. With similar heatwaves gripping much of the country, what could possibly be more refreshing than a tall, icy glass of frozen lemonade?
This personal journey through moving and intense heat perfectly illustrates the longing for simple, comforting pleasures that can cut through stress and discomfort. And for me, few things evoke that sense of comfort and home like a perfectly chilled frozen lemonade.
A Taste of Home: The Rhode Island Frozen Lemonade Legacy
During a much-needed break from the moving boxes, I stumbled upon a fascinating feature on the Cooking Channel’s website: “Across the Country: 50 State Dishes.” Naturally, Arizona’s entry was a chimichanga, a fitting choice given its proximity to Mexico. But as a native Rhode Islander, my curiosity was piqued about my home state’s culinary representation. Would it be the classic Johnnycakes, the officially recognized coffee milk, the groundbreaking grilled pizza from Al Forno, or perhaps a hearty “stuffie” – a quahog shell packed with a savory clam mixture? (Despite my aversion to seafood, I’ve always considered attempting those!)
To my absolute astonishment and delight, Rhode Island’s featured recipe was Frozen Lemonade! For anyone familiar with the “Biggest Little State in the Union,” or its neighboring regions, this immediately brings to mind the iconic yellow and green cup, synonymous with summer joy.
The true connoisseur knows that a Del’s Frozen Lemonade is never, ever consumed with a spoon or a straw. To do so is nothing short of sacrilege! We Rhode Islanders can always spot a tourist by this simple misstep. So, a friendly tip for your next visit: if you want to blend in with the locals, resist the urge to ask for cutlery. The authentic way to enjoy a Del’s is to lovingly squeeze the waxy cup, encouraging it to crack and crease, making it perfectly slushy and ready to be slurped. It’s an interactive experience, where a final squeeze might even send a delightful icy burst onto your nose – a rite of passage for any true Del’s enthusiast.
When I discovered this recipe, I was ecstatic! Living in Arizona, authentic Del’s is a rarity. While one local spot serves a version from a rotating machine, it’s simply not the real deal, especially when they offer it with a spoon! You can order the powder online and blend it with fresh lemons, but it never quite captures that unique, nostalgic taste. It’s much like trying to recreate a beloved family recipe; no matter how precisely you follow the steps, it never quite tastes “like Mom used to make.” (Fortunately, my dear mom, God rest her soul, was a great cook whose recipes were replicable, always imbued with plenty of love.)
My excitement over this recipe was also fueled by the potential “Mother of the Year Award” I envisioned. My children, especially my son, are absolutely obsessed with Del’s. He receives packets for every birthday and Christmas, his addiction is truly profound. So, when life hands you lemons, or you’re in the middle of a stressful move, why not make lemonade – specifically, frozen lemonade?
I couldn’t wait to try this taste of home. I doubled the recipe, convinced that if it even came close to the original, it would be inhaled almost instantly. My verdict on its authenticity will follow after the recipe details.

Ingredients
- 2 large lemons (for peeling)
- 1 ½ cups water (separated; ½ cup for cooling, plus additional for serving)
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ cups fresh lemon juice (from approximately 9 lemons)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Using a vegetable peeler, carefully remove the skin from two of the lemons, taking care to avoid including the bitter white pith. (I typically use two of the lemons designated for juice for this step.)
- Finely mince the lemon peel into very small pieces.
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, granulated sugar, and the minced lemon peel. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved and the liquid appears clear.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the remaining ½ cup of water, the fresh lemon juice, and the salt. This addition helps to cool the mixture slightly.
- Refrigerate the mixture for at least two hours, or until thoroughly chilled.
- Pour the chilled lemonade mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a slushy, frozen consistency.
- Serve immediately in a cup, adding a splash of water and stirring well if you prefer a softer, more slushy texture.
For best results, always use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Bottled or concentrate juice can impart a metallic taste.

My Honest Review: How Does it Compare to the Real Deal?
After all the anticipation, it was time for the moment of truth. I rate everything I make on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the highest, and this homemade Rhode Island Frozen Lemonade earned a solid 3 rolling pins. While it didn’t perfectly replicate the “real thing,” it certainly smelled incredibly authentic, conjuring a flood of wonderful memories. The taste was very similar, a delightful burst of lemon that would undoubtedly be considered fantastic by Arizona standards for frozen lemonade. However, for a discerning Rhode Islander like myself, it fell just shy of the iconic Del’s.
Perhaps it was the absence of the signature wax paper cup – a crucial element of the Del’s experience. (Though, to be fair, my son’s sole wax cup is currently serving a noble purpose as a pen holder, and I wasn’t quite desperate enough to confiscate it!) I found this homemade version to be noticeably more tart and sweeter than the original Del’s. To achieve a texture closer to the authentic slushy consistency, I found myself adding a splash of water to each scoop and mixing it with a spoon (a minor concession to practicality, not tradition!). With this adjustment, the consistency became almost exact, greatly enhancing the overall experience.
One minor quibble was the presence of too many tiny pieces of lemon peel. Authentic Del’s boasts distinct chunks of lemon pulp, with only a sparse scattering of peel. Next time, I would definitely strain the sugar-water-lemon peel mixture before combining it with the lemon juice and salt, perhaps adding back just a tiny touch of peel for a subtle aromatic hint. Despite these minor points, the bottom line is that this recipe works! It delivered a deliciously refreshing and satisfying drink, especially welcome in the intense Arizona heat. A critical tip: always, always use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Bottled or concentrate versions simply can’t compare and often impart an unpleasant metallic flavor.
If you’re not a native Rhode Islander, I believe you’ll absolutely love this recipe as is. But for my fellow “RI’ers,” while this is a fantastic homemade alternative, it simply won’t dethrone the “sign of the lemon.” So, when you get the chance, be sure to support the original and keep Del’s, a true Rhode Island icon, thriving!
