Indulge your senses and transport yourself to a serene tropical oasis, even on the hottest summer days, with this exquisite Blue Ocean Drink recipe. This captivating cocktail was an absolute highlight during our breathtaking Alaska cruise, quickly becoming my go-to refreshment, and I am confident it will soon claim a special place among your favorites too!

There’s an undeniable magic to sipping a perfectly crafted, refreshing drink while on vacation. It just elevates the entire experience, wouldn’t you agree? During our unforgettable cruise, amidst the majestic landscapes of Alaska, I discovered a drink that truly captured the essence of pure relaxation and joy: the Blue Ocean. While my heart will always hold a special spot for a classic Mojito, this vibrant blue concoction quickly stole the show. Imagine a perfectly frozen Pina Colada, but with a magnificent twist – a layer of brilliant Blue Curaçao. The result? A truly tremendous, visually stunning, and incredibly delicious beverage.
The moment I returned home, I knew I had to recreate this masterpiece. Not only do I love expanding the collection of unique drink recipes on my blog, but more importantly, I wanted a way to vividly recall the incredible memories of our trip. This Blue Ocean recipe isn’t just a drink; it’s a passport to paradise, a liquid memory of sun-drenched days and cool ocean breezes, even if you’re thousands of miles from the nearest beach or cruise ship.

What is Blue Curaçao and What Does It Taste Like?
Many people are captivated by the stunning color of Blue Curaçao but might not be entirely familiar with its unique flavor profile. This distinctive liqueur gets its name and its essence from the beautiful Caribbean island of Curaçao. It’s flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit, a unique and somewhat bitter orange native to the island. Unlike typical sweet oranges, the Laraha has a more aromatic and slightly bitter quality that, when distilled, creates a wonderfully complex flavor.
When you taste Blue Curaçao, you’ll first notice a sweet, bright orange peel flavor, reminiscent of candied orange. However, this sweetness is beautifully balanced by a subtle, slightly bitter finish, adding depth and sophistication to the liqueur. The striking blue color is purely for visual appeal, achieved through added food dye, making it a favorite for creating visually spectacular cocktails like our Blue Ocean. It’s this vibrant color that transforms ordinary drinks into extraordinary experiences, making them truly pop with Caribbean flair.
Essential Tips for Crafting the Perfect Blue Ocean Drink Recipe
Creating the ultimate Blue Ocean cocktail is simple, but a few key tips can elevate your drink from good to absolutely spectacular:
- Choose Your Rum Wisely: This versatile drink accommodates both white (light) and dark rum. White rum tends to offer a cleaner, crisper finish that allows the pineapple and coconut flavors to shine, while dark rum can introduce subtle notes of caramel and spice, adding a richer complexity to your cocktail. Experiment with both to find your preferred depth of flavor.
- Frozen vs. On the Rocks: While this recipe is designed for a delightful frozen experience, offering a thick, slushy texture that is incredibly refreshing, you can certainly make it over ice cubes for a lighter, chilled version. For that true tropical escape feel, I highly recommend the frozen rendition – it truly makes a difference!
- Mastering the Layered Effect: The signature “ocean water” look of this drink comes from carefully layering the Pina Colada mixture over the Blue Curaçao. The secret is to use a large spoon. Place the back of a large spoon against the inside of the glass, with the tip just barely touching the surface of the Blue Curaçao. Slowly and gently pour the blended Pina Colada mixture over the back of the spoon. This technique helps to disperse the thicker Pina Colada mixture evenly and prevents it from immediately mixing with the denser Curaçao below, preserving the beautiful layered effect. The larger the spoon, the more control you’ll have over this process.
- Garnish for Tropical Flair: Don’t underestimate the power of a festive garnish! To make these sweet drinks even more fun and visually appealing, adorn them with fresh pineapple wedges, bright maraschino cherries, and those charming, miniature cocktail umbrellas. These small touches transform your drink into a mini vacation in a glass, perfect for any occasion that calls for a touch of tropical joy.

Blue Ocean Cocktail Ingredients
Crafting these alluring tropical cocktails requires just five simple ingredients, ensuring a quick and easy preparation that doesn’t compromise on flavor or visual appeal:
- 1 ounce Blue Curaçao liqueur
- 1/3 cup rich coconut cream (not coconut milk, for that creamy Pina Colada texture)
- 3 ounces of your preferred rum – either white or dark rum will work beautifully
- ¾ cup vibrant pineapple juice
- 1 ½ to 2 cups of ice, depending on your desired slushy consistency

How to Make a Blue Ocean Drink: Step-by-Step
This ocean water cocktail is not only visually impressive but also incredibly simple to prepare, perfect for serving yourself and a friend, or scaling up for a party! Follow these easy steps to bring the tropics to your glass:
- Prepare Your Glasses: Begin by dividing the vibrant Blue Curaçao evenly between two elegant cocktail glasses. This forms the stunning “ocean” base of your drink.
- Blend the Pina Colada Mixture: In a high-speed blender, combine the creamy coconut cream, your chosen rum, the sweet pineapple juice, and the ice. Blend until the mixture is perfectly smooth and has a thick, slushy consistency, reminiscent of soft-serve ice cream.
- Create the Layered Effect (The “Ocean Foam”): This is where the magic happens! Carefully place a large spoon into one of the glasses containing the Blue Curaçao. Position the tip of the spoon just above the surface of the blue liqueur, ensuring the back of the spoon is gently pressed against the inside of the glass. Slowly and gently pour half of the blended Pina Colada mixture over the back of the spoon. This technique allows the thicker, white mixture to float gracefully over the blue, creating a beautiful layered effect that mimics ocean foam cresting on blue water. Fill the glass until it is approximately three-quarters full.
- Garnish and Serve: Repeat the layering process with the second glass. Once both drinks are prepared, complete their tropical transformation by garnishing each with fresh pineapple wedges, bright red cherries, and, if you desire that extra festive touch, miniature drink umbrellas. Serve immediately and enjoy your mini-vacation!

Can I Double This Blue Ocean Recipe to Serve More Guests?
Absolutely! This Blue Ocean drink recipe is wonderfully adaptable and scales up beautifully for larger gatherings. Whether you’re hosting a small get-together or a big backyard bash, you can easily double, triple, or even quadruple the ingredients. The ratios remain consistent, so simply multiply each ingredient amount as needed. For maximum convenience, consider making a large pitcher of the Pina Colada mixture in advance and keeping it chilled. Then, when your guests arrive, you can quickly assemble individual layered drinks, or let them serve themselves from the pitcher, adding the Blue Curaçao directly into their glasses before topping with the blended mixture. This strategy makes entertaining a breeze!
This drink is an absolute showstopper for pool parties, summer BBQs, or any occasion that calls for a touch of tropical festivity. It bears a delightful resemblance to the flavors of a Blue Hawaiian cocktail, but visually, it offers a truly unique and captivating presentation. The vibrant blue Curaçao effortlessly represents the deep, inviting ocean water, while the frothy white Pina Colada mixture beautifully mimics the gentle ocean foam lapping onto a sandy beach. It’s more than just a drink; it’s an edible landscape, a miniature piece of paradise in every sip.

Can I Make a Non-Alcoholic Blue Ocean Mocktail?
Yes, absolutely! Creating a delicious and refreshing Blue Ocean mocktail is incredibly simple, making it a fantastic option for guests of all ages or for anyone preferring a non-alcoholic beverage. To transform this cocktail into a mocktail, simply omit the rum from the Pina Colada mixture. You’ll still achieve that wonderfully creamy, pineapple-coconut flavor. If you find the mixture a bit too thick without the rum, you can easily adjust its consistency by adding a splash of coconut water, regular water, or even a little extra pineapple juice until it reaches your desired smoothness. The visual appeal will remain just as stunning, providing all the tropical vibes without the alcohol.
