Embrace Autumn Flavors with Homemade Baked Blueberry Applesauce

The golden days of summer have officially transitioned, ushering in the cozy embrace of autumn. Gone are the spontaneous trips to the lake, the sticky sweet indulgence of watermelon slices cooling us down, and the playful adherence to the “no white shoes after Labor Day” rule. As the leaves begin to turn and a delightful crispness fills the air, our thoughts naturally shift towards comforting, homemade treats that warm both body and soul. For me, this seasonal shift often sparks a desire to transform nature’s bounty into something truly special – and this year, it all started with an abundance of blueberries.

Just before summer bid its final farewell, we embarked on a delightful blueberry picking adventure. The fields were bursting with ripe, plump berries, and the sheer joy of gathering them was an experience in itself. Our efforts yielded a truly impressive haul: a staggering 39 cups of these tiny, antioxidant-rich gems. With such a magnificent bounty tucked away in the freezer, ready for culinary inspiration, I knew I had to find the perfect recipe to showcase their vibrant flavor and natural sweetness. This abundance became the catalyst for creating a delightful dish that perfectly bridges the seasons: our homemade Baked Blueberry Applesauce.

Why Homemade Applesauce is a Game Changer

I’ve always been captivated by the variety of fruit-infused applesauces available in stores. This sparked an idea: why not combine my freshly picked blueberries with our beloved classic baked applesauce recipe? Making applesauce from scratch is a profoundly rewarding experience. Not only does it allow you to control the quality of ingredients, but the aroma that fills your home as it bakes is simply intoxicating. It’s a comforting scent that evokes warmth, family, and the simple pleasures of the season. Our homemade version is consistently preferred over any store-bought alternative, primarily because of its fresh, unadulterated flavor and the ability to customize its texture and sweetness to our liking. The addition of blueberries takes this family favorite to an entirely new level, adding a beautiful tartness and a rich, fruity depth.

Ingredients

  • 8 large apples (such as Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp for best flavor and texture)
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (no need to thaw if using frozen)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste, depending on apple sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure vanilla extract yields the best results)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Lightly grease or spray a 9 X 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. In a small bowl, thoroughly combine the sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. This ensures the flavors are evenly distributed. Next, peel, core, and cut your apples into uniform slices. Aim for slices about ½-inch thick for even cooking.
  3. Place the apple slices into a large mixing bowl. Add the blueberries (if using frozen, do not thaw). Pour the prepared sugar and spice mixture over the apples and blueberries. Toss gently to coat all the fruit evenly, ensuring every piece is infused with flavor.
  4. Transfer the coated apples and blueberries into the prepared baking dish. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the fruit is wonderfully tender when pierced with a fork. The exact baking time may vary depending on the type of apples used.
  5. Carefully remove the foil. For a chunky applesauce, use a potato masher to crush the fruit to your desired consistency. If you prefer a smoother applesauce, an immersion blender works beautifully. Serve this delightful baked blueberry applesauce warm for a truly comforting treat, or chill it and serve cold as a refreshing snack or side.
