What is Chicken Cordon Bleu? Unpacking the Classic Dish
To truly appreciate the casserole version, it helps to understand its inspiration: the classic Chicken Cordon Bleu. This traditional French-inspired dish is a culinary masterpiece, renowned for its elegant presentation and exquisite flavor. It typically features boneless, skinless chicken breasts that are meticulously pounded thin, creating a delicate canvas for the fillings. These tender chicken cutlets are then carefully wrapped around savory deli ham and a generous slice of Swiss cheese, creating a delightful pocket of flavor. The entire creation is then coated with crunchy golden breadcrumbs, which provide an irresistible textural contrast, and finally baked or fried to a beautiful golden perfection.
The phrase cordon bleu itself literally translates from French to “blue ribbon.” While its historical roots are tied to the blue ribbon worn by the Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the highest order of chivalry under the French monarchy, it has evolved in culinary parlance to signify food prepared to a very high standard. We often use the term “blue ribbon” to describe something that is exceptionally delicious, expertly made, and truly memorable. When executed with care, an authentic Chicken Cordon Bleu undeniably lives up to this esteemed description, delivering a gourmet experience that is both rich and satisfying. Our casserole aims to capture this essence, bringing that “blue ribbon” taste directly to your family dinner table with remarkable ease.

It’s not just dinner; it’s a moment of culinary triumph on a busy Tuesday night.

Essential Ingredients for Your Delectable Cordon Bleu Casserole
One of the best aspects of this ham and chicken casserole is that it relies on a handful of readily available, simple ingredients. This ensures you can whip it up anytime a craving strikes or you need a reliable, quick meal solution. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to create this comforting dish:
- Egg Noodles: These form the comforting and substantial base of our casserole. Their broad, flat shape is ideal for soaking up the creamy sauce, ensuring every bite is rich with flavor. You can opt for wide or medium egg noodles based on your preference.
- Cream of Chicken Soup: This is a cornerstone for the casserole’s signature creamy texture and savory depth. I often reach for the low-sodium variety to better control the overall saltiness of the dish, allowing other flavors to shine through.
- Milk: Integral for achieving the perfect consistency in our sauce. Whole milk or 2% milk works beautifully, adding richness without being overly heavy. Avoid skim milk for the best flavor and texture.
- Swiss Cheese, grated: The quintessential cheese for any Cordon Bleu dish. Freshly grated Swiss cheese melts beautifully, creating those irresistible gooey pockets and lending its distinct nutty, slightly sweet flavor. If Swiss isn’t your favorite, feel free to substitute with Provolone, Havarti, or even Mozzarella for a milder taste.
- Sour Cream: A crucial ingredient that contributes a lovely tang and additional creaminess, balancing the richness of the cheese and soup. Full-fat sour cream is highly recommended for the best flavor and velvety texture.
- Dijon Mustard: This is the secret ingredient that truly elevates the casserole, providing that characteristic piquant, slightly spicy, and complex flavor that defines classic Cordon Bleu. Don’t skip it – a little goes a long way in enhancing the overall profile.
- Cooked Chicken: The star protein of our dish. This recipe is incredibly adaptable to using up leftover shredded chicken, or you can easily cut cooked chicken breasts or thighs into bite-sized pieces. For ultimate convenience, a store-bought rotisserie chicken is a perfect shortcut.
- Ham Steak, cut into bite-sized pieces: Adds another layer of savory, smoky flavor and complements the chicken perfectly. Pre-cooked ham steak makes preparation incredibly fast; simply dice it into small, manageable pieces.
For the Crispy Topping:
- Butter, melted: Acts as the binding agent for our crunchy topping, ensuring even browning and a rich flavor.
- Panko Breadcrumbs: These Japanese-style breadcrumbs are lighter and crispier than regular breadcrumbs, delivering an unparalleled crunch that perfectly contrasts the creamy casserole below.
- Grated Parmesan Cheese: Not only does Parmesan add a sharp, salty flavor to the topping, but it also helps the breadcrumbs bind together and achieve that desired golden, slightly melted crust.
- Dried Parsley: A simple touch of this herb adds a pop of color and a fresh, subtle flavor that brightens the entire dish, making it even more appealing.

How to Craft Your Delicious Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
Preparing this incredibly flavorful casserole is remarkably straightforward, requiring just a few simple steps. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can bring together such a satisfying and impressive meal. Follow these instructions for a perfect outcome every time:
- Prepare Your Baking Dish and Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to a consistent 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). While the oven heats, take a 9×13-inch baking dish and lightly coat the inside with a nonstick cooking spray. This crucial step ensures that your casserole won’t stick, making cleanup a breeze and guaranteeing easy serving.
- Cook the Egg Noodles to Perfection: Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add your egg noodles and cook them according to the package directions, aiming for an al dente texture. This means the noodles should still have a slight firmness to the bite, as they will continue to cook and absorb liquid in the oven. Once cooked, drain the noodles thoroughly and set them aside.
- Assemble the Creamy Casserole Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, milk, grated Swiss cheese, sour cream, and Dijon mustard. Whisk these ingredients together until they are well blended and form a smooth, creamy sauce. Next, gently stir in the cooked chicken pieces, diced ham, and the prepared egg noodles. Ensure all the ingredients are evenly coated with the rich sauce. Once combined, pour this mixture into your prepared 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
Creating the Irresistible Crispy Topping
The crunchy topping is what truly sets this casserole apart, adding essential texture and a golden finish. Here’s how to prepare it:
- Melt the Butter: In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. You can do this in short 15-20 second bursts in the microwave until it’s fully liquid.
- Combine Topping Ingredients: To the melted butter, add the Panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and dried parsley. Stir everything together until the breadcrumbs are thoroughly coated with the butter and seasonings. This ensures a uniformly crispy and flavorful topping.
- Apply and Bake: Evenly spread the breadcrumb mixture over the top of the casserole in the prepared baking dish. Once topped, transfer the dish to your preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly around the edges and the topping is beautifully golden brown and crispy.
- Cool and Serve: Once baked, carefully remove the casserole from the oven. Allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. This brief resting period allows the casserole to set slightly, making it easier to serve and ensuring the flavors meld perfectly. And just like that, it’s ready to be savored!
It’s just THAT easy to bring a touch of classic elegance to your dinner table with this simple yet sensational casserole!

Recipe Additions and Smart Substitutions for Every Palate
One of the joys of cooking casseroles is their incredible versatility, and this Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is no exception. Feel free to experiment with these additions and substitutions to tailor the dish to your family’s preferences or to simply use what you have on hand. Don’t be afraid to make it your own!
- Enhance the Flavor Profile: For an extra layer of savory goodness, consider adding a teaspoon of garlic powder to the sauce mixture, or season with a pinch of onion powder. A dash of salt and freshly ground black pepper can also significantly enhance the overall flavor, so adjust to taste.
- Cheese Alternatives: While Swiss cheese is traditional, many other cheeses melt wonderfully and complement chicken and ham. Monterey Jack offers a mild, creamy alternative, while Gruyere provides a more intense, nutty flavor. Even a sharp cheddar or a blend of Italian cheeses can work beautifully if you’re looking for a different cheesy experience.
- Cracker Crumb Topping: If Panko breadcrumbs aren’t available or you prefer a different texture, crushed Ritz crackers or buttery club crackers make an excellent substitute for the topping. They add a rich, buttery, and slightly saltier crunch that is equally delicious.
- Mustard Preference: Not everyone is a fan of the sharp tang of Dijon mustard. If you prefer a milder flavor, try using a good quality yellow mustard or even a honey mustard for a touch of sweetness. Adjust the quantity to your liking.
- Boost the Nutrition with Veggies: Incorporating vegetables is an easy way to add nutrients and color. Stir in some blanched green beans, a cup of frozen peas (add them directly to the hot noodle mixture to thaw), or finely chopped broccoli florets when you mix in the chicken and ham. Sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers would also be delicious additions.
- Low-Carb or Different Base Options: If you’re looking to reduce carbohydrates or simply prefer a different base, you can omit the egg noodles entirely. Instead, spoon the creamy Chicken Cordon Bleu mixture over a bed of fluffy white rice, creamy mashed potatoes, or even steamed cauliflower rice for a lighter option. This flexibility makes it a truly adaptable meal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
Here are some common questions and helpful answers to ensure your Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole turns out perfectly every time and fits seamlessly into your meal planning.
What should I serve with Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole?
This hearty casserole is quite a complete meal on its own, but pairing it with a fresh, vibrant side can elevate the entire dining experience. I personally love to serve it alongside a crisp Caesar Salad, which offers a refreshing contrast to the rich casserole. Additionally, some simply roasted vegetables like asparagus, green beans, or carrots add a healthy and colorful touch. Don’t forget a basket of warm, fresh homemade bread or crusty rolls for soaking up any extra delicious sauce!
Can I make this casserole ahead of time?
Absolutely! This casserole is a fantastic make-ahead option, perfect for meal prepping or preparing for a busy week. You have a couple of choices:
- For Freezing: Assemble the casserole as directed, but *do not* add the Panko topping. Instead, cover the baking dish tightly with a layer of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. You can freeze the unbaked casserole for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake, transfer it to the refrigerator overnight to thaw completely. Add the crumb topping just before baking, then bake as instructed.
- For Refrigerating: You can also prepare the casserole up to 24 hours in advance. Assemble the base mixture in your baking dish, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and store it in the refrigerator. Just before baking, prepare and add the crumb topping, then bake as usual. This ensures your topping stays wonderfully crisp.
How do I store leftover Chicken and Ham Casserole?
Leftover Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole actually tastes even better the next day as the flavors have more time to meld! To store, allow the casserole to cool completely to room temperature. Then, transfer any remaining portions to an airtight container, or simply wrap your baking dish tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days for best quality.
To reheat, you can portion out individual servings and warm them in the microwave, or place the entire dish (covered with foil) in a 350-degree F (175 degrees C) oven until warmed through. Be aware that the crumb topping may lose some of its crispiness upon reheating, but the flavor will still be fantastic!
