Furry Friend Friday: A Surprisingly Serene Week with Logan the Golden Retriever Puppy

Welcome back to Furry Friend Friday, the weekly celebration of all things Golden Retriever, featuring our beloved, energetic, and endlessly charming puppy, Logan! Each Friday, we dive into Logan’s latest adventures, share candid photos, and provide updates on his journey through puppyhood. If you’re a dog lover, a Golden Retriever enthusiast, or simply enjoy a good laugh at puppy antics, you’ve come to the right place. This week, we’re reflecting on a period that felt surprisingly… low key.
Yes, you read that right: low key. Now, for any seasoned puppy parent, the phrase “low key” might sound like a paradox when describing life with a four-legged ball of fluff and boundless energy. Isn’t a puppy’s very existence defined by its high-octane, sometimes chaotic, nature? Yet, believe it or not, this past week with Logan genuinely felt a little calmer, a touch more uneventful than his usual whirlwind. It was a pleasant, albeit perplexing, change of pace.
Apart from his essential daily “zoomies” – those explosive bursts of speed that transform our living room into a canine race track and our backyard into a blur of golden fur moving at what feels like Mach 1 – Logan didn’t unleash any major new shenanigans or dramatic escapades worthy of a headline. This relative tranquility was so unexpected that I found myself completely disoriented yesterday, struggling to recall the day of the week. The sudden realization that Friday was upon us, and a Logan update was due, hit me like a playful paw to the face! YIKES! Time truly flew by, yet the reason for its swift passage remains a delightful mystery, perhaps a testament to the unexpected peace Logan brought to our days.

One of our cherished weekly traditions, which Kurt and I started years ago while rigorously training for our epic hike in the Grand Canyon (a journey I’ve just realized I’ve never formally documented – note to self!), is our Saturday hike. We always relished exploring new trails, soaking in breathtaking scenery, and steadily increasing our mileage. When Logan bounded into our lives, bringing him along became an anticipated highlight. Our previous beloved Goldens, Brady and Keiser, also shared our passion for these outdoor excursions, making them even more special.
Given Logan’s tender age of just four months, our current hikes are, understandably, on the shorter side. We’re deep in the trenches of foundational training, which includes patiently working towards off-leash reliability. This is a journey that will undoubtedly continue for quite some time, demanding consistent effort and boundless patience from our end. And, of course, a significant part of this training involves tackling the age-old puppy challenge: preventing him from indulging in unsavory snacks found on the trail, particularly the dreaded POOP! It’s a constant battle of wills and wits, but essential for his health and our peace of mind. Early exposure to varied environments and consistent positive reinforcement are key to building a well-adjusted and trail-savvy companion.
Beyond our weekend adventures, daily walks are a cornerstone of Logan’s routine. On a recent Sunday, during a stroll around our neighborhood, we encountered a lovely display by one of the local Boy Scout troops: small American flags gracefully adorning the community. Logan, with a surprisingly polite demeanor, paused just long enough – perhaps a fleeting ten seconds – for me to capture a quick, patriotic snapshot. These simple moments of community engagement, paired with Logan’s innocent curiosity, often create the most memorable experiences.

Our mornings have settled into a comforting rhythm. Before I head off for my exercise routine, Logan and I share precious moments of quiet snuggles. These gentle interactions are a wonderful way to start the day, fostering our bond before the day’s excitement begins. Afterward, Kurt takes over, guiding Logan through his morning walk. These consistent routines not only provide Logan with structure but also ensure he gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation, contributing significantly to his overall well-being and making him a happier, more settled puppy.

I must admit, this week saw a noticeable improvement in Logan’s “poop situation.” Much to my delight and relief, Kurt took the initiative to walk along the path near our house, where he usually takes Logan for his morning strolls, and meticulously cleared quite a bit of the offending material. What a keeper he is! This thoughtful act has significantly reduced the temptation for Logan to sample unpleasant roadside “treats.”
Building on this momentum, during our walk today, we focused intently on reinforcing the “leave it” command every time we encountered something undesirable on the ground. Each successful avoidance was immediately rewarded with a high-value treat and enthusiastic praise. This consistent practice, coupled with endless patience, is truly the key to effective puppy training. It’s a continuous process of teaching self-control and good manners, ensuring Logan’s safety and making our walks more enjoyable for everyone. Much like raising our own children, isn’t it? The journey is not always glamorous, and it can be EXTREMELY draining, both mentally and physically. However, with unwavering persistence, the investment in time and effort invariably pays off in the long run. The only frustrating part is wondering: WHY does it take so long to reach that “long run” stage?
This week also included several invigorating walks in the park. One particular day, the park staff had recently mowed the lawns, leaving behind a verdant carpet of freshly cut grass clippings. Logan was ALL. OVER. IT! The moment he caught the intoxicating scent and saw the abundance of green shreds, he absolutely LOVED rolling around in the soft, fragrant pile. It was a pure expression of canine joy, a reminder of the simple pleasures that bring dogs so much happiness.

Our ongoing project with Logan involves mastering the art of playing catch. Needless to say, it’s proving to be less of an inherited skill than one might expect from a dog. I always harbored the assumption that fetching and catching were innate talents for most canines, especially Retrievers! Alas, Logan seems to be rewriting that rulebook, proving that every dog is an individual with unique learning curves. So, we continue to work on it, celebrating every tiny improvement and cherishing the effort he puts in, even if the ball occasionally bounces off his nose.
Yes, the “catch” saga continues, a testament to the patient dedication required in puppy training. Beyond playful pursuits, bedtime can sometimes present its own unique challenges. Some nights, Logan displays a curious reluctance to enter his crate, prompting Dad, Kurt, to step in and gently carry him to his cozy den. Observing this tender scene, one might conclude that Kurt is ready for some grandchildren, wouldn’t you agree? This heartwarming ritual, however, is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Logan is growing at an incredible rate, transforming from a tiny pup into a substantial, albeit still adorable, Golden Retriever. He’s becoming increasingly awkward to pick up, and his weight is steadily climbing, making those nightly lifts quite a workout for Kurt!

The dynamic between Logan and our resident feline continues to be a fascinating study in interspecies relations. While Logan still harbors a playful, sometimes relentless, desire to chase the cat, they do have their serene moments of “low key” coexistence. There are times when they will calmly approach each other, share a brief sniff of mutual acknowledgment, and then simply go their separate ways. These fleeting moments of peace are always a welcome sight. Then, of course, there are the other times…
Recently, as I sat at the kitchen table working on my computer, the living room loveseat, which faces away from my vantage point, became the stage for a subtle drama. I heard the cat emit a low, rumbling growl – a distinct sound that immediately signaled trouble. My first thought was “Brady…” Whoops! I mean Logan! It’s a habit I frequently fall into, mistakenly calling Logan by the name of our first (and last) Golden, Brady. Anyway, I knew Logan was undoubtedly instigating something to irk her, but I couldn’t discern the specific mischief since he wasn’t barking at her, which is his usual mode of annoyance. Curious, I walked over to investigate, and this is what I found:
It was seriously as if I had stumbled upon them in the very act of a clandestine feline-canine “make-out session,” though, of course, that wasn’t actually the case. But who knows what curious interactions Logan was engaging in before I arrived on the scene! It was a truly comical and unexpected sight. I don’t think I ever caught any of my human children in such an awkward, yet strangely endearing, situation! LOL.
