My recent journey to Kauai was, without exaggeration, the trip of a lifetime. Many years ago, as a ten-year-old, I visited Oahu with my parents. While I cherished that experience, I never envisioned returning to Hawaii, mistakenly believing I had “been there, done that.” How incredibly wrong I was!
If the thought of a Hawaiian escape has ever crossed your mind, I wholeheartedly implore you to consider the island of Kauai. Its tranquility is profound, its beauty absolutely breathtaking, and the warmth and friendliness of its local residents are unlike anywhere I have ever encountered. Last month, I had the privilege of spending seven glorious days on this island paradise, alongside a wonderful group of seven food bloggers and their two assistants. It was a vacation that perfectly balanced profound relaxation with exhilarating fun, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Where to Stay: Finding Your Perfect Hawaiian Home
We strategically chose to arrive on a Wednesday, a decision I highly recommend. Starting a vacation mid-week proved to be incredibly advantageous. Typically, tourists flock to Kauai from mid-December through Easter and again from mid-June to Labor Day. By avoiding peak weekend arrivals, we found the resort and many of our chosen destinations pleasantly uncrowded, and we experienced virtually no road traffic, allowing for seamless exploration of the island.
The weather during our stay was nothing short of perfect. While there were occasional brief rain showers, they never disrupted our plans. Most rain occurred in the afternoons or at night, moving through quickly and leaving behind refreshing air and vibrant landscapes. To truly experience the vast wonders of Kauai, renting a car is essential, as the island offers an abundance of attractions scattered across its diverse terrain.
Our entire stay was graciously hosted by The Villas at Poipu Kai, nestled on the stunning southern coast of the island. This location proved to be exceptionally convenient; most of the acclaimed restaurants we dined at and the thrilling activities we enjoyed were either a short distance away or, at most, a 45-minute drive. The Poipu area is renowned for its sunny weather and beautiful beaches, making it an ideal base for any Kauai adventure.
We occupied two exquisite villas, both of which were designed for ultimate comfort and luxury. Each villa was fully furnished, boasting multiple spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, efficient air conditioning, and the convenience of a full-size washer and dryer – a true blessing for longer stays. What particularly impressed us, as a group of food bloggers, were the gorgeous, fully-equipped, state-of-the-art kitchens. These culinary havens allowed us to prepare meals and snacks with ease, enhancing our group experience. My personal highlight, however, was undoubtedly the expansive lanai doors that could be completely opened, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. We could relax on the living room couch, immersed in the fresh Hawaiian air and surrounded by the island’s natural beauty. It was, in a word, magnificent!

Among the myriad activities we indulged in, the kayak tour combined with a scenic hike stood out as an incredibly serene yet invigorating way to experience the island’s lush interior. The early morning 7:15 am kayak tour along the historic Wailua River, culminating in a hike to the enchanting Secret Falls, offered by Rainbow Kayak Tours, is an absolute must-do.
Our guide, Thomas, was a true gem – witty, engaging, and brimming with fascinating knowledge about Kauai’s history and ecosystem. If you embark on this adventure, be sure to request him! The entire excursion spans approximately 4.5 hours and is thoughtfully designed to accommodate a wide age range, typically from 5 to 75, making it a perfect family activity. The kayaking portion was wonderfully peaceful, allowing us to absorb the verdant surroundings, while the hike through the rainforest to the hidden waterfall was nothing short of magical.
For this tour, I advise wearing your bathing suit beneath your clothes and liberally applying sunscreen. Opt for sturdy sneakers or proper hiking shoes; leave the water shoes behind. The trails can become quite muddy, and you’ll appreciate the enhanced traction. After the invigorating hike, you’ll be rewarded with the opportunity to swim in the refreshing pool beneath Secret Falls, followed by a delicious lunch, which is included in the tour price. While the sandwiches were satisfying, it was the pineapple that truly stole the show! I have never tasted such incredibly sweet, fresh pineapple anywhere else. It was an unbelievable delight, a testament to Kauai’s abundant natural bounty.
Epic Boat Tour: The Majesty of the Na Pali Coast
Right up there with the kayak tour, if not surpassing it in sheer spectacle, was our awe-inspiring boat tour with Holo Holo Charters. As someone who grew up by the water, being out on the ocean, witnessing Kauai from a marine perspective, felt like returning home. This excursion is undeniably one of the most phenomenal ways to truly grasp the grandeur of the island, especially its legendary Na Pali Coast.
The Na Pali Coast, with its towering emerald cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and secluded beaches, is an inaccessible masterpiece best viewed from the sea. Our tour offered panoramic vistas that are simply impossible to capture on land. We cruised past ancient sea caves, marveled at the sheer scale of the landscape, and kept an eye out for marine wildlife. Depending on the season, you might spot spinner dolphins playfully riding the bow waves or even humpback whales breaching in the distance. Holo Holo Charters provides a comfortable and exhilarating experience, allowing you to appreciate the raw, untamed beauty of Kauai’s most famous coastline. It’s an experience that awakens the senses and leaves an indelible mark on your memory.
Waimea Canyon: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific
A journey to the western part of Kauai is incomplete without a visit to Waimea Canyon, an unexpected and absolutely magnificent geological wonder. This vast chasm, often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” presents a stark and fascinating contrast to the island’s predominantly lush, tropical landscapes. As we drove higher, the terrain transformed, reminding me of arid drives through parts of Arizona, a truly unique sight on a Hawaiian island.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views. It feels as though you are gazing at a miniature, yet equally spectacular, version of the Grand Canyon itself. Numerous viewing platforms offer incredible photo opportunities and different perspectives of the canyon’s vibrant red earth, deep valleys, and dramatic cliffs. You can often spot impressive waterfalls cascading into the abyss. For those seeking more adventure, a network of trails invites hikers to explore deeper into this natural marvel, offering unparalleled access to its awe-inspiring beauty.
Kauai’s Pristine Beaches and Natural Pools
No Hawaiian vacation is complete without ample time spent on its world-renowned beaches. Poipu Beach, conveniently located near our villas, is an absolute gem you won’t want to miss. It’s consistently ranked among the best beaches in the U.S. for good reason. The sand is incredibly soft and golden, the water is crystal clear and perfectly temperate – Goldilocks herself would have deemed it just right! Poipu Beach is particularly family-friendly, with calm, protected coves ideal for swimming and snorkeling, teeming with colorful fish. While a portion of the beach has some rocky areas, a delightful sandy-bottomed inlet offers easy access to the inviting waters.
During our visit, a large Hawaiian green sea turtle (honu) gracefully swam near the shore, captivating many tourists. It is crucial to remember that these are wild animals, protected by law. While tempting, DO NOT touch or disturb them. We must respect their space and ensure their safety for future generations to enjoy. You’ll also notice an abundance of wild chickens and roosters freely roaming across the entire island – a quirky and pervasive aspect of Kauai’s charm!
Another lovely beach within a short walking distance from our villa was Brennecke’s Beach. This smaller, picturesque beach is famed for its consistent waves, making it an excellent spot for bodysurfing. Its soft sands and gorgeous coastal views provide a perfect backdrop for a relaxing afternoon by the ocean.
While not a traditional beach, Queen’s Bath is a truly unique natural wonder you won’t want to miss. Located on the northern side of the island in Princeville, this natural tidal pool carved into volcanic rock offers an exhilarating swimming experience. Access involves a short but somewhat challenging hike from the road. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are essential – leave the flip-flops behind – as the path can be steep and muddy in certain sections. Parking is extremely limited, so an early morning visit is highly recommended to secure a spot, or consider parking near the nearby golf course for a slightly longer, scenic walk.
Upon reaching the rocky coastline, you’ll first encounter an area where strong ocean currents and powerful waves crash against the shore. While some experienced locals may swim here, it’s generally advised to exercise extreme caution. For a safer, more tranquil experience, walk approximately five minutes to the left, and you will discover the main Queen’s Bath. Here, the waters are calmer, offering a serene and invigorating natural swimming pool, perfect for a refreshing dip amidst stunning natural beauty. Always check local conditions and warnings before entering the water, as powerful swells can occur.
Auli’i Luau: An Immersive Polynesian Cultural Experience
To fully immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant Polynesian culture, securing tickets to the Auli’i Luau at the Sheraton Kauai Resort is an absolute must. This distinguished luau holds the unique distinction of being Kauai’s only beachfront luau, offering an unparalleled setting on Kiahuna Beach. Its convenient location, just a five-minute drive from The Villas at Poipu Kai, makes it easily accessible for an evening of enchantment.
The scenery was utterly breathtaking, with the sun setting majestically over the Pacific Ocean, casting a spectacular array of colors across the sky. We truly couldn’t have wished for a more idyllic backdrop. The culinary experience was equally impressive, served buffet style, featuring an array of traditional Hawaiian dishes. My personal favorites included the perfectly Grilled Marinated I’o (Beef) and the delightful Pineapple Upside Down Cake – a sweet, tropical treat. Beyond the delicious food, the entertainment was simply fantastic. Witnessing the Polynesian culture come alive through captivating dance, music, and storytelling was a privilege. The dancers were incredibly talented, their performances conveying the spirit and history of the islands with grace and power. It’s an unforgettable cultural immersion that is sure to be enjoyed by the entire family.

As food bloggers, we were particularly fortunate to receive a private tour of Koloa Rum Co., where we learned about their meticulous process of crafting exquisite Hawaiian rum. This experience greatly enhanced our appreciation for the delicious Mai Tais we enjoyed at various restaurants, many of which proudly feature Koloa rum.
