Today’s culinary journey is particularly meaningful, as it allows us to explore not only a fantastic new recipe but also the vital connection between the food on our plates and the journey it takes from farm to table.

A Commitment to Sustainable Sourcing: Partnering for a Better Future

I am immensely proud to be collaborating with the United Soybean Board and Best Food Facts to bring you this sponsored post. As always, the opinions and insights shared here are entirely my own, rooted in a deep appreciation for our food system. This partnership highlights the incredible work being done to ensure our food sources are sustainable for generations to come.

Throughout my life, food has always been a source of immense gratitude. It’s not merely sustenance; it’s a profound comfort, a celebration of flavor, and an essential part of our daily well-being. Since launching “365 Days of Baking and More” in January 2011, my appreciation for food has only deepened. This platform has allowed me to delve deeper into the origins of our ingredients, leading to a profound realization: **every single meal we consume is built upon ingredients carefully nurtured and harvested on a farm.**

While I conceptually understood this, the true depth of that connection – the tireless effort, dedication, and passion behind it – was something I previously took for granted. This newfound understanding has instilled in me a tremendous respect for our dedicated farmers, their families, and the demanding work they commit to 24/7. They are the backbone of our food supply, and their commitment to quality and sustainability deserves our utmost recognition.

Edamame Guacamole

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to join Lisa of Simple Joy and Jocelyn of Inside BruCrew Life in a fascinating Zoom discussion with a panel of experts on the critical topic of sustainable farming. We heard directly from Brent Renner and Dave Walton, two dedicated soybean farmers from Iowa, who shared invaluable insights into their farming methods and the proactive steps they are taking to ensure the long-term viability and productivity of their farms. Their stories underscored the ingenuity and forward-thinking practices that are shaping the future of agriculture.

The conversation extended beyond the farm, including perspectives from Janet Helms, Global Sustainability Developer of the Inter IKEA Group, and Shannon Tolliver, Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability Manager for White Castle System, Inc. Hearing from these corporate leaders emphasized how major companies are integrating sustainable practices into their supply chains, recognizing their responsibility in fostering a more environmentally conscious food system. This holistic view highlighted that sustainability is a shared effort, from individual farmers to global corporations.

It is always deeply fascinating to converse with farmers and listen to their compelling stories. Their unwavering passion for their work, their incredible work ethic, and their profound commitment to their land and the animals they raise are truly inspiring. It’s clear that delivering the highest quality products to consumers is not just a business goal, but a personal mission for them.

Time and again, I’ve heard them speak about being good stewards of the land, doing their absolute best for both their immediate environment and the surrounding community, all while ensuring the well-being of their own families. At the forefront of all these discussions is, without fail, the concept of sustainability. This isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a foundational principle that guides their every decision, a topic that remains incredibly important and must continue to be a top priority for all of us.

A common, unifying goal shared by virtually every farmer I’ve had the privilege of speaking with over the years, including Brent and Dave, is the aspiration to leave their land in an even better condition than they received it. This commitment to continuous improvement drives them to refine their farming methods year after year through a variety of innovative approaches. These include meticulous data collection, leveraging cutting-edge technology such as GPS-guided equipment for precision agriculture, investing in advanced machinery, and adopting sophisticated tilling practices that enhance soil health and minimize environmental impact. Their dedication ensures both productivity and ecological responsibility.

During our call with all four experts, I was particularly impressed to learn about the significant strides companies like IKEA and White Castle, among many others, are making towards sustainability. Their efforts extend far beyond simple gestures. They are actively working to reduce their corporate carbon footprint, investing in and developing the communities around the small farmers who supply them, and collaborating closely with their suppliers to implement sustainable improvements throughout their entire value chain. This comprehensive approach to environmental and social responsibility is genuinely fascinating and sets a powerful example for the industry.

For those curious to delve deeper into the intricacies of farming sustainability, Best Food Facts offers a wealth of engaging and informative content. I previously had the pleasure of partnering with them when I filmed the CRISPR technology videos, and I can attest to their commitment to scientific accuracy and transparent communication. And now, let’s turn our attention to the star of today’s post: our incredible Edamame Guacamole recipe!

What do I need to make this Guacamole with Edamame?

Creating this vibrant and flavorful Edamame Guacamole is surprisingly simple, requiring just a few fresh ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Shelled Edamame: To save time and effort, opt for already shelled and thawed edamame. While buying them in pods can be fun, extracting the beans can be quite time-consuming, so the pre-shelled option makes this recipe much quicker.
  • Fresh Limes: You’ll need the vibrant juice from fresh limes to add that essential zesty tang and prevent the avocado from browning.
  • Water: A small amount of water helps achieve a perfectly creamy consistency. You might not need it all, or you might prefer to add more, little by little, until your guacamole reaches your desired smoothness.
  • Tomato: Whether to include tomato is a matter of personal preference. Some enjoy the added juiciness and subtle sweetness; others prefer their guacamole without. Feel free to use a plum or small tomato, finely diced.
  • Red Onion: Red onion offers a sharper, more pungent flavor that I personally prefer in my guacamole, but white onion can also be used if that’s what you have on hand or prefer a milder taste. Make sure it’s finely minced.
  • Fresh Cilantro: Chopped fresh cilantro is non-negotiable for that authentic, bright, and herbaceous flavor that defines great guacamole.
  • Kosher Salt: Essential for enhancing all the other flavors. Adjust to your taste.
  • Black Pepper: A dash of freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle warmth and balances the flavors.
  • Cumin: Ground cumin contributes an earthy, warm depth that complements the other spices beautifully.
  • Freshly Grated Ginger: This is the secret ingredient that makes this guacamole truly unique! I often use the convenient tubed fresh ginger found in the refrigerated produce section of grocery stores. You’ll need about an inch of fresh ginger if grating yourself, or about a ½ teaspoon of the prepared paste. Feel free to adjust the amount to your taste – a little more can add a wonderful spicy kick. For an extra touch, a sprinkle of pickled ginger on top can also be a delightful garnish!
  • Avocado: While optional for those seeking an avocado-free version, ripe avocados provide the classic creamy texture and rich flavor we all love in guacamole.
  • Jalapeño(s): These are entirely optional. I typically leave them out as I prefer milder foods. However, if you crave heat, feel free to seed and finely dice one or two jalapeños. For serious spice lovers, don’t hold back!

Can I make guacamole without avocado?

Absolutely! One of the fantastic aspects of this Edamame Guacamole recipe is its incredible versatility. If you’re looking for an avocado-free alternative, or simply want to try something different, you can easily omit the avocado entirely. In this case, the edamame will form the creamy base, allowing its distinct flavor to shine even more prominently, perfectly complemented by the other fresh ingredients. This makes it a great option for those with avocado allergies or anyone wanting to reduce their calorie intake while still enjoying a hearty and delicious dip.

I genuinely adore this recipe because it empowers you to customize it precisely to your preferences. Love ginger? Add a little more for an extra zing! Not a fan? Feel free to scale it back or leave it out completely. Craving a fiery kick? Pile on those jalapeños, or even introduce a pinch of cayenne pepper for intensified heat. This recipe truly invites experimentation, allowing you to create your perfect Edamame Guacamole every single time.
