A Day of Unexpected Mishaps: From Bumps to Watery Woes

Before we dive into the highlights, let’s talk about Logan’s rough start to the week. Yesterday was quite the day for our poor guy, filled with two distinct incidents that left us a bit frazzled, but ultimately grateful for his quick recovery.

The Coffee Table Catastrophe: A Lesson in Puppy Proofing

The morning started with his usual post-walk ritual. After a refreshing stroll with dad, Logan burst through the door, brimming with youthful exuberance. His routine usually involves a quick bite of food, a playful attempt to “torment” Winnie, our very patient cat who cherishes her quiet moments when Logan is out, and then a series of energetic laps around the living room. It’s a joyful, if slightly chaotic, display of puppy energy. However, on this particular morning, his boundless enthusiasm led to a rather painful discovery.

In his full-speed zoomies, Logan misjudged his rapidly increasing size and collided head-on with the corner of our coffee table. The impact was startlingly loud, and his immediate yelp was heartbreaking. He smacked his right shoulder with such force that he instantly started crying and refused to put weight on his leg. Our hearts sank. In that moment of panic, visions of emergency vet visits and X-rays flashed before our eyes. We quickly scooped him up, showering him with comforting words and gentle massages. After what felt like an eternity of anxious observation, lots of love, and a much-needed rest, he slowly started to move more freely. To our immense relief, within a few hours, he was back to his playful self, a little wiser perhaps, but completely recovered. This incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of constant vigilance and proper puppy-proofing, especially as they grow so quickly and their spatial awareness develops.

The Great Water Bowl Debacle: Cat vs. Puppy vs. Spilled H2O

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any more eventful, last night brought another memorable, albeit chaotic, incident. The star of this particular drama was Winnie, our beloved cat, who generally lives a sheltered, indoor life. Winnie rarely goes outside – and for good reason. Living in an area with coyotes and bobcats, we’re extremely cautious about her safety. However, in a moment of swift agility, she managed to slip out into our side yard when Kurt briefly let Logan out.

I heard Logan barking excitedly from the yard, and immediately suspected Winnie was the cause. Sure enough, there she was, enjoying a fleeting taste of outdoor freedom. I rushed out to retrieve her, scooping her up into my arms. But Logan, ever the protective (or perhaps just overly enthusiastic) sibling, was not pleased. All the way back into the house, he was jumping up, trying to nip playfully at Winnie, clearly upset by her outdoor excursion.

As we finally stepped inside, the situation escalated. Logan, still fixated on Winnie, made another energetic leap towards her. This time, however, his timing was off, and his footing failed him. He tumbled backward, landing squarely into his full water bowl! The result was an immediate deluge, sending water sloshing across the hard floor with a resounding crash. Logan, completely surprised and disoriented, began flailing and slipping on the wet surface. Winnie, already on edge from the outdoor adventure and the sudden noise, let out a high-pitched scream and promptly launched herself out of my arms. And me? I just screamed – a mix of shock, exasperation, and sheer disbelief at the unfolding pandemonium.

What a night! Needless to say, my floor received an unscheduled, thorough cleaning as I mopped up the lake that had formed. Fortunately, both animals recovered quickly from their shock. Logan, after a moment of confusion, was back to his usual self, and Winnie, after regaining her composure, retreated to a high perch, probably questioning her life choices. Moments like these are a poignant reminder that while having a puppy is incredibly rewarding, it’s also tough, man. It’s a constant dance of patience, cleanup, and unconditional love.

Weekend Wonders: From Mountain Hikes to Coffee Shop Treats

Fortunately, the rest of the week was a dramatic improvement! The weekend brought glorious weather and exciting new adventures, proving that the challenges of puppyhood are always balanced by moments of pure joy and discovery.

A Mountainous Maiden Voyage: Logan’s First Real Hike

Saturday was a particularly special day as we took Logan for his first real hike, venturing up to the stunning Lynx Lake in Prescott, Arizona. It was an absolutely beautiful day, with the weather perfectly crisp and sunny, ideal for exploring. The fall leaves were just starting to turn, painting the landscape in vibrant hues of gold and crimson, making it finally feel like autumn had truly arrived – a rare and cherished experience here in the valley.

We weren’t entirely sure how Logan would react to this entirely new experience. Would he be overwhelmed by the sights and sounds? Would he enjoy the water? Our initial concerns were quickly quelled. After a brief period of apprehension regarding the gently lapping waves of the lake (and I do mean gently, as there were hardly any significant waves!), he quickly got over his initial fear and transformed into an excited, eager explorer. His tail wagged furiously as he sniffed every new scent and explored every rustling leaf along the trail.

The highlight of the hike came when we arrived at a shallow brook. Logan absolutely loved it! He splashed, romped, and ran all over the place, thoroughly enjoying the cool water. In a moment of pure puppy exuberance, he went a little deeper than he anticipated, completely submerging himself in the brook. It was an incredibly cute sight – a little golden submarine temporarily disappearing beneath the surface, only to re-emerge shaking off the water with gusto. We captured this hilarious moment on video and shared it on his Instagram page here, so be sure to check it out for a good laugh!

An essential item for any outdoor adventure with Logan has been this collapsible drinking/food bowl. It was absolutely perfect for the hike! I love how it folds down completely flat, making it incredibly easy to carry in a backpack, yet it holds enough water to ensure Logan stays well-hydrated throughout our excursions. It’s truly a game-changer for active dog owners.

Sunday Sweetness: Coffee Shop Visits and Car Wash “Help”

Sunday morning brought another cherished tradition: our now weekly walk to the local coffee shop. This outing is not just for us; it’s become a beloved ritual for Logan too. The ladies at the coffee shop were, as always, incredibly excited to see him, showering him with attention and ear scratches, which he absolutely adores. The highlight for Logan, of course, was receiving his very own puppaccino! He devoured it with pure delight, every lick a testament to his enjoyment. These weekly socializations are so crucial for a growing puppy, helping him become comfortable and well-mannered in various environments.

Later that afternoon, Logan decided to lend a paw and “help” dad wash the car. He absolutely loved it when Kurt squirted him with the hose – turning the chore into a playful game. He was doing an excellent job supervising, ensuring every corner was sparkling clean, or at least, thoroughly wet!

Growing Pains and Puppy Progress: The Ongoing Journey

Logan is still very much a lap dog in his own mind, cherishing his morning cuddle time with me, despite his rapidly increasing size. He’s eating LOTS and growing at an incredible pace, shedding his puppy fluff for a more mature golden coat. It’s astonishing to witness his transformation week by week.

However, with growth comes new challenges. He’s now tall enough to jump onto the couch, which is a boundary I’m not particularly happy about. I’ve been trying to reinforce that the couch is not for him, but consistency is key, and sometimes it’s harder than it looks! Then, just last night, while Kurt was watching the game and, much to my chagrin, had Logan up on the couch (grrrr!), Logan decided to take his newfound vertical freedom a step further. He boldly WALKED from the couch, ACROSS the coffee table, to the other couch where the cat was peacefully napping. Oye! The audacity! It’s clear we have some serious training to reinforce about furniture boundaries and what exactly constitutes appropriate living room navigation. Every day is a learning experience for both Logan and us!
