This past week was nothing short of spectacular, filled with moments that reminded us why having a puppy brings so much joy and laughter into our lives!

A World Series Victory and a Puppy’s Playful Spectacle
First and foremost, for all the avid baseball fans out there, you’ll be thrilled to know that our beloved Red Sox triumphed in the World Series! The excitement in our household was palpable, creating an unforgettable backdrop to Logan’s burgeoning personality. The roar of the crowd, the tension of each play – it was a true celebration of sportsmanship and team spirit, shared with our newest family member.
In a previous Furry Friend Friday post, I shared the story behind Logan’s name. My initial thought was to name him Benni, a tribute to the Red Sox outfielder, Andrew Benintendi, reflecting our desire for a New England sports reference. However, my husband, Kurt, had a different perspective. His firm stance was, “He hasn’t won a championship yet, so we’re not naming him that or for any other player on the team.” While I might have playfully expressed my disappointment then, his point was valid, and “Logan” truly suits our spirited Golden Retriever.
Despite not bearing the name of a championship player, Logan enthusiastically joined us for Game 4 of the World Series. His reactions were priceless! He only got a little (okay, maybe a lot) startled when my cheers and screams punctuated key moments throughout the games. It was a heartwarming sight to see him observing the flickering screen, occasionally cocking his head at the sudden bursts of noise, a true, albeit unwitting, participant in our family’s sports revelry.

So, now that our Red Sox have clinched the title, does this mean we can rename him? Kidding, of course! He is unequivocally Logan, and that’s how he’ll stay. However, our daughter Emma’s suggestion to give him “Eovaldi” as a middle name struck us as brilliantly funny. It’s a delightful nod to the team’s triumph and a testament to the joy Logan brings into our lives.

Embracing a New Routine: The Positive Impact of Puppy Life
Our days now revolve around Logan’s structured routine, which includes dedicated walks both in the morning and at night. These walks aren’t just for him; they’ve become an integral part of our daily rhythm. He particularly relishes the chance to zoom around the sand volleyball court at the local park. It’s his personal racetrack, where he tears around with boundless energy, kicking up sand in his wake. You can catch a glimpse of his joyful sprints in a video uploaded to my Instastories.
This burst of activity on the volleyball court is the grand finale of our walk before we head back to the car. It’s incredible to observe how keenly he anticipates it; you can tell he knows exactly when we’re approaching that special spot, his pace quickening with excitement.
Establishing this consistent routine with Logan has been surprisingly beneficial not just for him, but for Kurt and me too. It’s amusing to realize that this little guy has effectively recalibrated our sleep schedule, encouraging us to go to bed earlier and rise with the sun. It forces us to prioritize rest, ensuring we’re refreshed and ready for whatever the day brings.

Moreover, this new routine has eliminated any excuses for skipping my morning gym sessions. While I’m working out, Kurt takes Logan for his essential morning trail walk, ensuring our energetic Golden Retriever puppy gets his much-needed exercise and mental stimulation. It’s a symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits, and we’re immensely grateful to Logan for introducing this positive shift into our lives!
Saturday Serenity and Splashy Explorations at Clear Creek
Saturday brought another exciting adventure as we ventured north for our weekly hike to Clear Creek in Arizona. Logan absolutely thrived, immersing himself in the natural wonders of the area. He frolicked in the cool water, chasing after various interesting bugs with an inquisitive spirit.

Despite his love for water, Logan was initially a bit wary due to the creek’s swift current and the lack of a shallow, easily wadeable spot. To ensure his safety and comfort, Kurt carefully walked into the water, gently coaxing Logan to join him. It took a little patience and encouragement, but eventually, Logan ventured in. Kurt kept a firm but gentle hold on him, preventing him from drifting with the current, as we’re still uncertain about his swimming capabilities. Discovering if a puppy can swim is best done in a controlled and safe environment, not in a fast-moving creek!
This experience reminded us of our previous dog, Keiser, who didn’t instinctively know how to swim. It took considerable effort and dedicated training sessions after we moved to New Hampshire for him to truly get the hang of it. For a while, he was more of a sinker than a swimmer! It’s a common misconception that all dogs are natural swimmers, but each dog, even a Golden Retriever known for its water affinity, needs to learn and build confidence at their own pace.

Unleashing the Retriever Instincts
During our hike, Logan truly embodied his breed’s name, going into full “Retriever mode.” He suddenly heard a subtle sound coming from the other side of the creek, which immediately put him on high alert. His ears perked up, eyes narrowed, and his entire body language shifted to intense focus. It was a fascinating display of his innate instincts, showcasing the hunter and observer within him.

Moments later, his attention was completely captivated by an inchworm crawling on a leaf. He watched it with an almost meditative intensity for several minutes, his nose twitching slightly. It was a testament to his developing curiosity and keen observation skills. We were quite surprised he didn’t attempt to taste his newfound fascination; perhaps the novelty of the movement was enough to hold his attention.

Puppy Naps and First Tastes: Milestones in Growth
Yesterday, after a refreshing walk in the park, Logan succumbed to puppy exhaustion and fell fast asleep in the car. The position he chose was utterly baffling – curled up in a way that defied comfort, yet he was sound asleep! What truly surprised us was the depth of his sleep, given that our walk wasn’t particularly long, and I hadn’t even run him (due to wearing flip-flops). It just goes to show how quickly Golden Retriever puppies can switch from boundless energy to complete repose.

Last night marked another “first” for Logan: his inaugural taste of a carrot. He approached it with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. After I handed it to him, he proudly carried it off, unsure of its purpose. He then proceeded to play with it, rolling it around on the floor, taking tentative little bites, but never quite finishing the whole thing. It was clear he wasn’t as enthusiastic about them as our previous dog, Brady, who absolutely adored carrots!
In a hilarious turn of events, Logan even growled and barked at the carrot a couple of times, as if it were an unfamiliar intruder. It just goes to show the unique personalities and preferences each puppy develops, making every new experience a memorable one.

Growing Pains and Cherished Cuddles: Logan at 16 Weeks
This afternoon, Logan had his scheduled visit to the vet for additional vaccines. At just 16 weeks old, he already weighs a robust 34 lbs! It’s no wonder I’m finding it increasingly challenging to pick him up. The rapid growth of a Golden Retriever puppy is truly astonishing, a constant reminder of how quickly they transition from tiny fluff balls to sizable companions.
I know the day will come when I’ll no longer be able to scoop him up with ease, but I sincerely hope he continues his morning ritual of climbing onto my lap. Those precious moments, where he settles in for a cuddle, are undoubtedly some of the best parts of my day. It’s a connection that deepens with each passing week, solidifying his place as a cherished member of our family.
