Furry Friend Friday: Logan’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Antics at Bartlett Reservoir and Beyond
Welcome back to another exciting edition of Furry Friend Friday! Each week, we bring you the latest adventures and endearing antics of Logan, our spirited Golden Retriever puppy. If you’re a fellow dog lover, particularly captivated by the charm of Golden Retrievers or the playful chaos of puppies, you’re in for a treat. This week, we’re diving deep into Logan’s dual personality – a true Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – as we recount his thrilling first visit to Bartlett Reservoir and his evolving puppy behavior.

Our recent Saturday adventure took us to the breathtaking Bartlett Reservoir, nestled within the vast and beautiful Tonto National Forest. This wasn’t just any ordinary outing; it was an important step in Logan’s development, combining exploration with a crucial introduction to water.
An Arizona Oasis: Our Adventure to Bartlett Reservoir
Bartlett Reservoir is a gem located approximately an hour’s drive from our home, a journey that’s as scenic as the destination itself. The route winds through the charming towns of Cave Creek and Carefree, offering picturesque desert landscapes and unique local sights that make the drive an enjoyable part of the experience. It’s truly a testament to Arizona’s diverse beauty, transitioning from bustling suburban areas to tranquil natural expanses.

As we mentioned in last week’s post, Kurt was eager for Logan to experience the water. Golden Retrievers, true to their name, have an innate love for water, and exposing Logan early to swimming and water play is vital for his development and happiness. Bartlett Reservoir offered the perfect opportunity, a place we hadn’t visited before, providing a fresh perspective on Arizona’s stunning natural beauty.
The timing for our visit couldn’t have been better. We arrived to find the reservoir wonderfully quiet and uncrowded. Aside from a few boaters enjoying the vast expanse of water, we practically had the entire lake to ourselves. This tranquility extended to the hiking trails, where we encountered no other hikers, making for a truly peaceful and personal experience with nature.
We began our visit with a walk along one of the trails, which, while beautiful, proved to be quite challenging. The path featured numerous quick, steep hills and an often unsteady, slippery terrain. For casual strollers or those unaccustomed to vigorous hiking, this particular trail might be a bit too demanding. However, for avid hikers seeking a good workout amidst stunning scenery, it offers a rewarding experience. Alternatively, the breathtaking views of the reservoir and surrounding landscape can also be enjoyed from various accessible parking lots around the lake, providing a less strenuous option for appreciation.
Upon reaching the water’s edge after our trail walk, Logan’s excitement was palpable. He bounded straight towards the lapping waves, only to quickly retreat with a comical backward hop as the water rushed towards him. It was a classic puppy reaction – a mix of curiosity and startled caution, a moment that brought a genuine laugh to our faces.

It took a bit of encouragement, but once Logan grew accustomed to the sound and movement of the water, Kurt skillfully coaxed him in with his favorite motivator: a sturdy stick. As soon as the stick hit the water, Logan’s inherent retriever instincts kicked in. His hesitation vanished, replaced by an eager determination to retrieve his prized possession. Watching his natural instincts take over was truly a joy.
A little while later, and with a newfound confidence, Logan ventured further into the water, swimming with purpose towards another floating stick. However, just as he was within reach, a moment of puppy apprehension seemed to wash over him, and he turned back towards the shore. It appeared he had a momentary change of heart, a small step back in his water exploration journey. But that’s perfectly fine; these things take time, and we’ll certainly try again!

Watching him revel in the water was immensely rewarding. His sheer delight was evident in every splash and playful paddle. These early water experiences are not just for fun; they’re crucial for building confidence and fulfilling the natural instincts of a Golden Retriever. His comfort in the water is growing steadily, promising many more aquatic adventures in his future.
I particularly cherished the shot below. It captures Logan in a moment of pure focus, intently trying to maneuver a stick that’s just out of view closer to him. Despite his best efforts, the stick remained elusive for a moment. Fortunately, the wind was on our side, gently blowing various treasures – including his coveted stick – right towards the shore, into his waiting paws.

And then, the triumphant moment! “Look, Ma! I got my stick!” he seemed to exclaim with his whole being. The pride and happiness radiating from him as he emerged from the water, stick firmly in mouth, were absolutely heartwarming. It’s these small victories that make puppy parenthood so incredibly rewarding.

After our trail exploration and Logan’s thrilling water debut, Kurt and I decided against further strenuous hiking. Instead, we embraced the simple pleasure of the afternoon, spending hours sitting on the tranquil beach, simply enjoying Logan’s joyful presence. He made the most of the open space, indulging in exuberant “zoomies” – bursts of frenetic energy across the sand and into the shallow water. The beach offered an abundance of interesting sticks and natural elements for him to explore, keeping him thoroughly entertained and content.

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of Puppies: Decoding Logan’s Dual Nature
Now, let’s delve into the fascinating personality trait that earned this week’s title: Logan’s remarkable Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moments. For those unfamiliar, Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale features Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected and friendly figure, who transforms into the ruthless and violent Mr. Edward Hyde by night. And to our delightful exasperation, this literary parallel perfectly captures Logan’s alternating temperament.
Picture this: in the mornings, Logan embodies the quintessential Dr. Jekyll. He is the sweetest, most affectionate puppy, showering us with cuddles, content to sprawl across my lap, soaking up every moment of gentle attention. His gaze is soft, his demeanor serene – a truly angelic furry companion. Then, almost as if a switch is flipped precisely twelve hours later, a complete transformation occurs. It’s an entirely different story!
He. Is. Unreal!

Do not let that angelic face fool you for a second! Seriously, folks, when Kurt returns home from work, it’s as if a signal is sent: GAME ON! While we understand he’s still a puppy navigating his world, there’s a distinct shift in his energy. The sweet, calm gaze is replaced by a mischievous glint in his eyes. He’ll scrunch his nose, let out a high-pitched, insistent bark, and then the puppy nipping begins. It’s not malicious, but a clear expression of his boundless energy and need for interaction, often manifesting as playful (but sometimes sharp!) bites. Oye, indeed!
There have been a couple of instances where his evening exuberance escalated to the point where we’ve had to firmly “lay down the law,” so to speak. Rest assured, this never involves anything that would harm him – no animals were injured in the making of this blog post! Our approach is simply to become a bit more physical and stern in our demeanor, using clear, firm commands and gentle but consistent physical redirection to guide him back to calm behavior. He seems to understand immediately when Dad means business, much like children learning boundaries from a parent. It’s fascinating how raising a puppy truly mirrors the experience of raising children, with all its joys, challenges, and the constant need for patience and consistent guidance.
It’s always insightful to observe the varied parenting styles people adopt, both with their children and their beloved pets. Some result in wonderfully well-behaved individuals, while others face ongoing battles. The key, we’ve found, lies in understanding their developmental stages and providing appropriate outlets for their energy and instincts.

First Impressions: Logan’s Debut at the Dog Park
Just yesterday, Logan experienced another significant milestone: his first visit to a dog park. We took him to Grover Basin Dog Park in Phoenix. While I had hoped for a more spectacular experience, perhaps with water features for him to explore, the park itself was rather uneventful. However, it still served its purpose as a fun change of scenery and an important socialization opportunity.
He absolutely relished the freedom of being off-leash, chasing his ball with an uninhibited joy that only open space can provide. There were a few other dogs present who approached him with curiosity, offering the customary sniffs and introductions. Logan handled these interactions well; he wasn’t afraid or reactive, displaying a calm demeanor. However, he also wasn’t overly enthusiastic about chasing or engaging in prolonged play with them. He’s still learning the ropes of dog park etiquette and how to interact with new canine friends.
In a moment of classic Logan communication, he subtly let me know when he was ready to leave by simply walking purposefully towards the entrance from the far side of the park. It was his polite, clear signal that he’d had enough stimulation for the day. “Alright then,” I thought, “I guess it’s time to go.” His ability to communicate his needs, even subtly, is one of the many things we adore about him.

Holiday Excitement: Family Reunion and Logan’s Big Test
Next week promises even more excitement and a new challenge for Logan: all three of our children are coming home for Christmas! HOORAY! Our eldest, Alex, will be traveling all the way from Berlin, Germany, while Emma and Cameron will arrive from Philly. It has been two whole years since our entire family has been together, and the anticipation is immense!
Kurt and I are particularly thrilled, and a little curious, to observe how Logan adapts to having five people in the house instead of just the two of us. It will be a significant change for our furry friend, and we’re eager to see how his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality handles the increased activity, attention, and general festive chaos. We’re confident it will be an unforgettable Christmas, and I’ll be sure to capture plenty of pictures of them playing with Logan to share with you all next week.
