A Journey Through Summers Past: From Rhode Island to Arizona and Back Again

My own summer story began in Chicago, but every year, the magic truly ignited when I flew back to our native Rhode Island to spend time with my grandparents. Those summers were filled with an unparalleled sense of adventure and freedom, creating a tapestry of cherished memories in the smallest state. My days were a mix of exhilarating field trips organized by the recreation department, countless blissful hours spent at the beach with sand between my toes, and the thrill of learning to sail on the sparkling waters of Narragansett Bay. These formative experiences instilled in me a deep love for New England summers.

When I married my high school sweetheart, Kurt, we knew there was no better place to raise our own children than in the very state that had shaped our youth. And so, our children’s summers mirrored ours in many beautiful ways – sun-drenched trips to the beach, scenic boat rides to enchanting Newport and historic Block Island, endless hours of laughter with friends, and the excitement of baseball games. Alongside these classic summer activities, our family table was a feast of summer favorites: sizzling hamburgers, classic hot dogs, gooey s’mores, and, of course, an abundance of ice cream. I still fondly recall the night I surprised the kids with ice cream sundaes for dinner. Their delighted squeals and beaming smiles are etched into my memory – a reminder that sometimes, breaking the rules creates the sweetest memories. Before our children ventured into their teenage years and perhaps started to resent our moving them, our family embarked on a new adventure, relocating to Phoenix, Arizona. Despite the incredible experiences in Arizona, the allure of Rhode Island remained strong. Growing up here was truly special, and the enduring presence of Kurt’s mother, sister, and brother in the area only intensified our longing. I missed the distinct four seasons, but above all, I yearned for the unique charm and vibrant energy of New England summers. That deep-seated connection to our roots ultimately drew us back.
