Essential Ingredients for the Best Meatball Subs

Crafting the perfect meatball sub doesn’t require an extensive list of ingredients, but choosing quality components makes all the difference. Here’s what you’ll need to assemble these mouthwatering sandwiches, along with tips for selecting the best of each:

  • Quality Pasta Sauce: The foundation of any great meatball sub is a rich and flavorful tomato sauce. You can opt for your favorite jarred marinara or arrabiata sauce for convenience, or if time allows, a homemade sauce will truly elevate the dish. Look for sauces with a robust tomato flavor and balanced seasoning.
  • Italian Cheese Blend: A blend of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, provolone, and Romano offers a fantastic depth of flavor and excellent melting qualities. Mozzarella is crucial for that signature stretchy, gooey texture. Feel free to use a single cheese like all mozzarella or provolone if that’s what you have on hand, but the blend provides a more complex taste.
  • Fresh Basil: This aromatic herb adds a burst of freshness that brightens the entire sandwich. While dried basil can be used in a pinch, fresh basil leaves provide an incomparable fragrance and flavor that makes a significant impact. Don’t skip it if you can help it!
  • Frozen Meatballs: The ultimate shortcut for busy weeknights! Choose your favorite brand of frozen Italian-style meatballs, whether they’re beef, pork, turkey, or a combination. For those who love to cook from scratch, making your own meatballs is a rewarding alternative – consider these homemade meatballs or even mozzarella-stuffed meatballs for an extra special treat.
  • Torpedo Rolls (Hoagie or Sub Rolls): The bread is paramount for a great sub. Torpedo rolls, also known as hoagie or sub rolls, are ideal because they’re sturdy enough to hold the generous filling without becoming soggy. French bread or even hearty hot dog buns can also work if you can’t find traditional sub rolls. Ensure they are fresh for the best texture.
  • Italian Seasoning: This blend of dried herbs like oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary enhances the savory Italian notes of the meatballs and sauce. If you don’t have a pre-mixed Italian seasoning, a sprinkle of dried oregano and a bit more dried basil will do the trick.

Perfect Side Dishes to Complement Your Meatball Subs

Transform your delicious meatball sub into a complete and satisfying meal with the right accompaniments. Here are some fantastic side dish ideas that pair wonderfully with the rich flavors of your sandwich:

For a refreshing contrast, a crisp green salad is always a good choice. Toss mixed greens with our vibrant Homemade Italian Dressing to add a zesty, herbaceous note that perfectly complements the hearty subs. It’s a simple way to round out your lunch or dinner with fresh vegetables.

If you’re looking to sneak in more veggies, Roasted Parmesan Broccoli is an excellent option. The savory, slightly charred broccoli florets with a hint of Parmesan cheese offer a delightful texture and flavor that stands up well to the robust sandwich.

Can’t get enough of those classic Italian flavors? These Baked Stuffed Tomatoes, filled with cheesy goodness, will make an incredibly happy pairing alongside your meatball subs. Their juicy sweetness and cheesy filling echo the main dish beautifully.

When time is of the essence, don’t hesitate to keep it simple. A handful of crunchy carrot sticks or classic potato chips makes for a quick and easy side. For a traditional deli-style experience, add a crisp dill pickle spear to cut through the richness of the sandwich and awaken your palate.

Anatomy of the Perfect Meatball Sub: What to Put On a Meatball Sub

At its heart, a classic meatball sub is a glorious trinity: juicy meatballs, a rich tomato-based sauce, and plenty of cheese. But it’s the interplay of these elements, along with a few crucial additions, that transforms a good sandwich into an unforgettable one.

For this easy meatball sub recipe, we combine tender, savory meatballs with your preferred pasta sauce. This foundational pairing sets the stage for a burst of Italian flavor. The magic truly happens when a generous amount of Italian-style cheese blend is added. As the subs are briefly broiled in the oven, this cheese melts into a wonderfully gooey, golden layer, perfectly enveloping the meatballs and sauce.

To achieve the quintessential Italian taste, don’t underestimate the power of fresh basil leaves. Their vibrant, slightly peppery aroma and flavor provide a bright contrast to the richness of the meatballs and cheese. A sprinkle of Italian seasoning further enhances the savory notes, tying all the components together into a harmonious, mouthwatering Italian sub sandwich that’s far superior to anything you’d find at a fast-food chain. Each ingredient plays a vital role in creating a balanced and deeply satisfying experience.

These Meatball Sub Sandwiches are easy, satisfying and bursting with flavor! Turn ordinary frozen meatballs into a crowd pleasing meal with this quick method.

Ingredients

  • 14 oz. frozen meatballs
  • 25 oz pasta sauce
  • 4 torpedo rolls or sub rolls
  • ½ cup Italian Style Cheese Blend
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, divided

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the pasta sauce and frozen meatballs. (Depending on their size, you’ll want about 5 or 6 meatballs per sandwich, so approximately 20-24 meatballs total). Cook the meatballs and sauce over medium heat for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating and to prevent sticking. The meatballs should be thoroughly heated through and the sauce gently simmering.
  2. While the meatballs are simmering, prepare your oven. Place an oven rack in the upper third of the oven. Preheat your broiler on a low setting. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a sheet of aluminum foil for easy cleanup. Arrange the 4 sub rolls on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. If your rolls are not pre-sliced, carefully slice them lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through; leave one side intact to create a “hinge.” Spread a small amount of the warm pasta sauce onto the bottom half of each roll. Carefully spoon 5-6 meatballs into each roll, ensuring they are nestled comfortably.
  4. Generously sprinkle each sandwich with about 2 teaspoons of the chopped fresh basil and ½ teaspoon of the Italian seasoning. Then, cover each meatball-filled roll with 1-2 tablespoons of the shredded Italian cheese blend. Distribute the cheese evenly over the meatballs and sauce.
  5. Carefully transfer the baking sheet with the assembled sandwiches into the preheated oven. Broil for approximately 3 minutes, keeping a close eye on them to prevent burning. The cheese should be beautifully melted and bubbly, and the rolls lightly toasted to a golden crisp. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with any remaining fresh basil for a final touch, and allow them to cool slightly for a minute or two before serving. Enjoy your perfectly homemade, easy meatball subs!
