As the excitement builds for the biggest game of the season this Sunday, every fan knows that a successful game day party is as much about the food and drinks as it is about the action on the field. Whether you’re hosting a grand gathering or enjoying a cozy get-together, having the right snacks and beverages is key to a memorable experience.
Here we are again, diving into the world of delicious game day treats! As a passionate fan (especially when our beloved Patriots are playing!), I believe you can never have too many festive options for your party spread. And what better way to celebrate team spirit than with colorful, boozy, and utterly fun Game Day Jelly Shots?
Crafting the Perfect Game Day Ambiance
Beyond the game itself, creating an immersive atmosphere is what makes a game day truly special. We’ve previously shared ideas like our chocolate “Deflated Footballs”, which are adorable on cupcakes or enjoyed on their own. Now, we’re taking the festivity up a notch with these vibrant, team-colored jelly shots, designed to add an extra layer of fun to your celebration.
Imagine your guests’ delight as they grab a colorful cube matching their favorite team’s colors, each one a delightful burst of flavor and a touch of spirited fun. These aren’t just any party snacks; they’re conversation starters, mood setters, and a truly unique way to express your allegiance.
Important Safety Note: Enjoy Responsibly!
A word of caution: these jelly shots are quite potent. It’s crucial to consume them responsibly and, by all means, keep them well out of reach of children. The vivid colors and sweet flavors can be very appealing to youngsters, so please ensure they are stored securely away from curious hands. If you prefer to make them without alcohol, it’s incredibly simple! Just substitute the vodka with an equal amount of water. This makes for a fantastic, family-friendly treat that still boasts all the visual appeal of team colors without the buzz.
The original recipe for these delightful concoctions was adapted from the innovative Jelly Shot Test Kitchen, a fantastic resource for creative gelatin recipes. We’ve tailored it to ensure maximum team spirit and ease of preparation for your ultimate game day party.

Ingredients
Blue Gelatin Layers
- 2 2.79-ounce packages Jolly Rancher Blue Raspberry Gelatin
- 4 packages unflavored Knox gelatin
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups UV Blue Raspberry Flavored Vodka (or water for non-alcoholic)
Red Gelatin Layers
- 1 2.79-ounce package Jolly Rancher Cherry Gelatin (or watermelon for better flavor)
- 2 packages unflavored Knox gelatin
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup cherry flavored vodka (or watermelon flavored vodka for substitution)
Green Gelatin Layers
- 1 2.79-ounce package Jolly Rancher Green Apple Gelatin
- 2 packages unflavored Knox gelatin
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup green apple flavored vodka
White Gelatin Layers
- 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 packets unflavored Knox gelatin
- 1 ½ cups boiling water
- ½ cup cold water
Instructions
Directions for Blue Gelatin
- Pour 2 cups of water into a medium saucepan. Evenly sprinkle the 4 packets of Knox unflavored gelatin over the water. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 1-2 minutes to “bloom” the gelatin.
- Heat the saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin completely dissolves. This process should take approximately 5 minutes, ensuring no grainy texture remains.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the 2 packages of Blue Raspberry Gelatin and stir thoroughly until it is fully dissolved into the mixture.
- Finally, stir in the 2 cups of UV Blue Raspberry Flavored Vodka. Set aside to cool slightly before use.
White Gelatin Layer
- In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of boiling water with the entire can of sweetened condensed milk. Stir well until completely smooth, then set this mixture aside.
- In a separate small bowl, pour ½ cup of cold water. Sprinkle the 2 packets of unflavored gelatin over the cold water. Let it stand for 2-3 minutes until the gelatin appears grainy and has absorbed the water.
- Add ½ cup of boiling water to the small bowl and stir vigorously until the gelatin completely dissolves and the mixture is clear.
- Add this dissolved gelatin mixture to the sweetened condensed milk mixture. Stir to ensure everything is well combined. It is crucial to let this mixture cool down to room temperature before layering to prevent it from melting the set gelatin layers below.
Directions for Red Gelatin
- Pour 1 cup of water into a small saucepan. Sprinkle the 2 packets of Knox gelatin over the water and let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
- Heat on low, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes until the gelatin dissolves completely.
- Remove from heat, add the 1 package of Cherry Gelatin (or watermelon for a better flavor profile) and stir until fully dissolved.
- Stir in 1 cup of the cherry flavored vodka (or watermelon flavored vodka if substituting). Allow to cool.
Directions for Green Gelatin
- Pour 1 cup of water into another small saucepan. Sprinkle the 2 packets of Knox gelatin onto the water and allow to bloom for 1-2 minutes.
- Heat on low, stirring continuously for approximately 5 minutes until the gelatin is fully dissolved.
- Remove from heat, then add the 1 package of Green Apple Gelatin and stir until it completely dissolves.
- Stir in 1 cup of green apple flavored vodka and let it cool before assembling.
Assembly of the Game Day Jelly Shots
- Lightly spray two 8×8-inch pans with cooking spray. Wipe out any excess spray with a paper towel to create a very thin, even coating; this aids in easy removal later.
- Pour 1 cup of the cooled blue gelatin mixture evenly into the bottom of each prepared pan. Carefully place the pans in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to allow this layer to set. While the blue layer is chilling, prepare your white gelatin mixture as directed above.
- Once the blue layer is mostly set (it should be firm enough not to ripple when gently touched), gently pour ½ cup of the room-temperature white gelatin mixture over the blue layer in each pan. Return to the refrigerator for another 15 minutes to set. During this time, prepare both the red and green gelatin mixtures separately, ensuring they cool to room temperature.
- For your “Patriot’s” themed pan (or whichever team uses red), gently pour 1 cup of the room-temperature red gelatin over the set white layer. Place it back in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- For your “Seahawk’s” themed pan (or green team), gently pour 1 cup of the room-temperature green gelatin over the set white layer. Place it back in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- Once these colored layers are set, carefully pour another ½ cup of the room-temperature white gelatin into each pan. Return to the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- Follow with another 1 cup layer of the blue gelatin in each pan. Place them in the fridge for an additional 15 minutes.
- Add a final ½ cup layer of the white gelatin to each pan, chilling for 15 minutes.
- Finally, pour the remaining 1 cup of red gelatin into the Patriot’s pan and the remaining green gelatin into the Seahawk’s pan. Return both to the refrigerator to set completely for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to ensure firm layers.
Notes
During the layering process, if any of your gelatin mixtures begin to thicken too much, you may need to gently return them to a liquid form. This can be done by reheating the saucepan on very low heat or by placing the bowl of white gelatin in a larger bowl of warm/hot water, stirring until it becomes pourable again. Remember, the key is to ensure all gelatin layers are at room temperature when adding them to the pan. If a layer is too warm, it will melt the previous set layer, ruining your distinct stripes.
As the pans become colder with each added layer, you might find it necessary to gently spread each subsequent gelatin layer with an offset spatula for even distribution, especially towards the end of assembly.
For the red gelatin, while cherry is traditional, we highly recommend substituting it with watermelon flavored gelatin for a much more appealing taste profile. Just be sure to also switch to watermelon flavored vodka to match! If you wish for more vibrant, prominent colors, feel free to add one to two drops of food coloring to each gelatin mixture before pouring.
To easily remove the set jelly shots from the pans, briefly sit the bottom of each pan in warm water for about 1-2 minutes. This will gently loosen the gelatin from the edges. Cut the large gelatin slab into individual squares or desired shapes with a sharp knife, then carefully remove them with an offset spatula. Place the finished jelly shots on a refrigerated plate and keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve. For optimal enjoyment and hygiene, these shots are best passed around to guests rather than being left out on a table for extended periods.

Beyond the Recipe: Tips for Success and Flavor Innovations
After a thrilling photo shoot, one might accidentally spill a vodka shot into the plate – a moment that signals it’s time to clean up and perhaps reflect on the potent nature of these treats! Indeed, these Game Day Jelly Shots are quite strong, but undeniably a lot of fun when enjoyed responsibly.
When it comes to flavor, a particular experience with cherry gelatin taught me a valuable lesson. While it delivered the desired red color for our Patriots-themed shots, the taste was surprisingly similar to cough syrup, which was quite off-putting. For a genuinely delicious red layer, I highly recommend opting for watermelon-flavored gelatin instead. While it might not be quite as deep a red as cherry, the superior taste is well worth the slight color variation. Of course, if you happen to enjoy the unique flavor of cherry cough syrup, then these might be perfectly fine for you and your guests!
For those who desire even more vibrant and prominent team colors, a simple trick is to add one to two drops of food coloring to each gelatin mixture before it sets. This can really make your team’s colors pop, ensuring your jelly shots are as visually exciting as the game itself.
Elevate Your Game Day Party: Ideas & Customization
Making homemade jelly shots is a fantastic way to personalize your game day celebration. Unlike store-bought options, you have complete control over flavors, colors, and potency. Consider the opposing team’s colors as well to create a fun “rivalry” tray! This encourages playful banter and adds another layer of engagement for your guests.
Selecting Your Flavors
The beauty of jelly shots lies in their versatility. For blue, blue raspberry or berry blue are excellent choices. For green, green apple or lime work wonderfully. For white, the sweetened condensed milk layer provides a creamy, neutral flavor that balances the fruity notes. When choosing vodka, flavored varieties perfectly complement the gelatin. Beyond blue raspberry, cherry, and green apple, consider citrus vodkas for lemon or orange gelatin, or even whipped cream vodka for a dessert-like shot. Always remember to match the vodka flavor to your gelatin for the best taste experience.
Perfecting the Layers
The key to those striking, distinct layers is patience and temperature control. Each layer must be sufficiently set before the next is poured. Additionally, ensuring each subsequent layer is at room temperature prevents it from melting the layer below. This meticulous process ensures a beautifully layered shot that holds its shape and visual appeal. Don’t rush it! The fridge is your best friend here, working its magic in 15-minute intervals.
Serving and Storage
Once fully set, cutting your jelly shots into neat squares with a warm, sharp knife will yield the best results. An offset spatula is invaluable for carefully lifting them from the pan. Keep them chilled until serving; gelatin shots are best enjoyed cold. For a fun serving idea, arrange them on a platter with toothpicks for easy grabbing, or even in small individual plastic cups if you prefer not to cut them.
Final Thoughts for a Fantastic Game Day
Have an incredible time this Sunday, celebrating with friends, family, and these spirited Game Day Jelly Shots. Remember, the goal is fun and festivity, so please consume all alcoholic beverages responsibly. And above all, it bears repeating: PLEASE DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! Your safety and the safety of others are paramount.
Enjoy every moment of the game, the camaraderie, and the delicious treats.
And, of course… go PATS!!! 😉
