Embracing Change: Our 19th Move, New Beginnings, and Weekly Culinary Inspirations

Well, here we are again! I can hardly believe I’m sharing this news once more, but yes, we are moving. If you’ve been a long-time follower of our journey, you’re likely aware of the many times Kurt and I have packed up our lives and relocated over our 33 and a half years of marriage. It’s been quite the adventure, leading us through 18 different homes and countless memories. Now, we’re officially on to number 19. Nineteen! It still feels surreal to say. I distinctly remember declaring with absolute conviction when we moved into our current apartment that this would be our “one. more. time.” Oh, how quickly plans can change! As the saying goes, never say never, right?

Our next chapter brings us full circle, as we’ll be moving back into the very first apartment we occupied when we returned to Rhode Island in April of 2019. The decision wasn’t made lightly. A significant rent increase, coupled with the lingering concern that our tiny, unwelcome guests (yes, the mice!) might make a comeback, prompted us to re-evaluate our living situation. Ultimately, we decided it was the best move for us to downsize and return to the more compact, one-bedroom apartment. The current housing market in Rhode Island is incredibly challenging, with exorbitant prices making homeownership a distant, albeit cherished, goal for now. It’s not that we can’t afford a home, but rather, we refuse to pay an inflated price for one. We’re patient, and we truly believe we’ll get there. Mark my words!

This upcoming move, while a familiar undertaking, always signifies a fresh start, a chance to reorganize, declutter, and refocus. It also means more inspiration for delicious recipes and clever home tips, as we navigate this new phase. Speaking of culinary delights and getting organized, let’s dive into what’s cooking in our kitchen this week, along with some fantastic Super Bowl ideas and my latest favorite find to help with the moving process!

Essential Tools: Favorite Product of the Week

With moving on our minds, organization and efficient packing have become top priorities. This week, I’m absolutely thrilled to share a product that has made a significant difference in my packing strategy: the versatile IKEA zippered storage bags. I was fortunate enough to be gifted one of these sturdy blue bags initially, and I instantly fell in love with its practicality and robust design. Their spacious interior and durable material make them indispensable for transporting a wide variety of household items.

Since that first experience, I’ve gone ahead and purchased a set of four more, and they’ve been invaluable. I’ve successfully packed away our linens, extra blankets, and pillows, keeping them clean and contained. What’s even better is their capacity – they can comfortably hold up to 55 lbs, making them perfect for heavier items or larger volumes. I’ve even started rolling up clothes directly on their hangers and placing them inside, which will save a tremendous amount of time unpacking and re-hanging. They are incredibly sturdy, feature convenient handles for easy carrying, and are surprisingly half off right now! This is a fantastic deal for anyone looking to organize or move.

Kitchen Wisdom: Tip of the Week

Have you ever experienced the disappointment of baking a batch of perfectly chewy cookies, only for them to harden and lose their delightful texture the very next day after storage? It’s a common kitchen woe, but thankfully, there’s a simple, ingenious solution that utilizes a common pantry staple.

To keep your freshly baked cookies wonderfully soft and chewy, simply place a piece of fresh white bread in the airtight container with them. The bread acts as a moisture donor, and through the process of osmosis, the cookies will begin to absorb the moisture from the bread. As a result, your cookies will retain their desirable softness, while the bread will gradually harden. Once the bread has become firm, simply replace it with another fresh piece to continue the magic. That is, if you still have any cookies left to enjoy!

I am always eager to learn new tricks and discover what makes your kitchen life more efficient and organized. If you have any clever tips or hacks that have truly helped you, please don’t hesitate to share them with us! We’d love to feature your insights in our future newsletters, and if your tip is chosen, I’ll be sure to give you a first-name shoutout. Your shared wisdom helps our entire community of home cooks and organizers. ❤️

Thank you for joining me on this journey of change, culinary exploration, and practical living. We’re excited for what this new chapter holds and look forward to sharing more with you soon!
